After locking myself back in my room, I quickly take a bite of my sandwich and shuffle through the pile of clothes on my floor for a clean towel. Of course, it's on the bottom. The sound of the front door opening with a loud cry before wafted under the space between my door and the soft carpeted flooring. The loud clicking of heels rang out. A velvety sweet voice floated through the air like wind chimes on a sunny spring afternoon. "Hey, William." I could hear the wave in her voice and the hint of a wink. All I could think was of how hilariously opposite we are. Alexis is always happy and up beat like her average day is spent on cloud nine. I on the other hand, am not. Suddenly my door burst open.
"Hey, babe! Whoa! Where are your clothes? Also, cute hair." She said to me with a smirk. looking up, I rolled my eyes at her.
"I'm going to go shower." I pushed past her with my towel over my arm feeling entirely overwhelmed with her spirits. A pang of jealousy settled deep into the pit of my stomach fighting for air as I shoved it down deep into the back of my mind. My subconscious quickly laying brick and mortar around it.
"Missy!" She called out to me sweetly.
I turned around slowly almost dangerously. "What?" My voice was clipped short and annoyed. A scowl settled easily over my features.
She giggled. Only she could find my bitchiness cute. "You forgot to eat your sandwich. You don't want to go on an empty stomach." She held it out to me almost as if it was a peace offering. A simple smile danced on her features.
I felt the ice around my heart soften a little at my best friend. A sweet smile graced my features as I seemed to be pulled into her gravitation. Once I stood in front of her, I pulled her into a hug and kissed her cheek sweetly. "Thanks, babe." I grabbed my sandwich before walking back out of the room and down the hallway. I enter the bathroom finishing the sandwich in the process and immediately peel the oversized T-shirt that clung to my body off of me. The sound of someone clearing their throat behind me cut through the air. Turning to glance over my shoulder, I find William leaning against the wall giving me a smirk. His eyes never left mine as if he were asking permission to look anywhere and everywhere other than my eyes. Annoyance snaked it's way into my nervous system. How could I keep forgetting he lives here now. Rolling my eyes, I clung the shirt to my chest before reaching out to slammed the bathroom door shut. I reached in past the shower curtain and pulled the knob nestled neatly into the wall. The shower head hissed under the pressure of the water and the bathroom began to fill with steam. I then continued to get undressed before wiping the steam off of a small portion of the floor length mirror behind the door to steal a glance at myself. Jesus, I look like a car crash. My long red curls were tangled and matted with sleep but the dark circles under my eyes beg to differ. I had bruises on my thighs and my spine and ribs stuck out. I twisted in front of the floor-length mirror running my fingers gingerly over my ribs causing a frown to find my lips. I looked like I died. I shook my head at the sight grateful for the grace of the steam to quickly swallow the gap in the mirror and stepped into the comforting warmth of the shower. Standing with my back to the stream, I let the water roll over my body for a minute just taking in the moment of peace. I sighed knowing Alexis would drag my a*s out of the shower if I took too long and moved to wash my body and hair. I took careful measures to make sure the conditioner saturated the rat's nest that currently resided on the top of my head. I let it seep into the shafts of my hair as began to shave my legs. Also, take great care not to miss any spots. Afterward, I made sure to use a body scrub to avoid the razor burn that was sure to erupt over my skin.
"Missy are you almost done or did you die?!" Alexis shouted dramatically from the other side of the door.
I let out a giggle. "I'm getting out now!" I hollered back to her. Rinsing the remaining conditioner out of my hair I quickly turned off the showerhead and stepped out. Tightly wrapping a towel around my body, I made my way out of the bathroom and back to my room. Upon seeing Alexis laying back on my bed, I give her a stern look. "I thought you were going to meet me there?" I questioned almost accusingly.
She gave me a knowing glance from her spot on the soft silk of my duvet. her hair was laid out around her like a golden halo stark in comparison to her Sunkissed complexion. "Yeah, then you went MIA all day. I figured from how much you were bitching and moaning this morning, I would, you know, make sure you didn't die." She propped herself up on her elbow as I stood there half amazed with my arms crossed over my chest.
I rolled my eyes at her. "Well thank you mom for being so concerned about me."
"Well someone has to be." She said matter of factly. A weird silence fell between the both of us and she knew she struck a nerve. Her usual giddiness was sucked out of her angular features. Instead of addressing the elephant in the room she just breezed past it like she knew I would. "William seems like he is all settled in. Have you been playing nice?" Just like that we were back to our usual banter with her sly comment and a wink.
I sneered at her. "You're such an asshole. Get out so I can get dressed!" I reached over and grabbed a pillow before sending it through the air aimed directly for her face. She let out a laugh that felt like a warm breeze.
She stood up then amusement playing heavily in her features. "I'll be in the living room but if you need help, I suggest asking Mr. Sexy pants over there." She said in a sing-song voice while gesturing to the wall our two bedrooms share. I chucked another pillow in her direction but it died in mid-air during her retreat to the living room. After closing the door behind her, I turned my attention to the closet. Time to get to work.
