The leader of the Silver Fangs advanced, his purpose unmistakable. I was his target. Axel acted instinctively, pushing me behind him, his frame between the attackers and me. "Run," he snarled, his tone raw. "Get out of it, Zoe." He was a force of nature, dispatching the attackers with brutal accuracy. His fighting was perfect, his strength incredible. He was a loose cannon, a released predator. I didn't budge. The man had uncovered so much, and I wasn't certain I could believe Axel. He whirled and gave me a fiery glare. It was my choice. I turned and ran, shouts of combat receding farther and farther in the distance behind me. I didn't stand any chance of escaping, but I had to try. I had made it to the outside of the compound perimeter wall in terror. I jumped to a wall. There was a stab-like pain, and I hit the floor. I came to, the leader of the Silver Fang leaning over me. He was holding me down, his face inches from my own. He uttered my name, his voice a hiss. "He lied to you, Zoe," he said, his eyes exuding cold satisfaction. "Axel is not your protector. He is your prisoner-taker. He lied to you." The knife glinted in his hand. "I now know the truth," he gasped. I saw Kael there. I was lost but knew that I was to be hurt. "He's why you are here, Zoe. You are just collateral damage." He was going to take the final step when all finally went down
