Raymond’s POV. The oak doors clicked shut. I sat up, grabbing the edge of the covers to swing my legs out of bed and go after Elena. But before I could lift myself up from the mattress, Biana threw herself across my lap in a cloud of sickeningly sweet perfume. “Oh, Raymond! My heart stopped when I heard!” Her hands hovered near my collar, avoiding the bloody gauze. “The thought of losing you—of leaving me a widow before our life has even begun!” I stared straight ahead, the intense pull at my ribcage eclipsed by the tightness in my throat. Elena had slipped right back behind her professional demeanor the second she woke up. This, after she had softened against me last night, and after she didn’t fight me when I kissed her… I was convinced for a moment that I finally had my mate back.
