CHAPTER 20 NEVILLE PACED UP and down outside the cinema. Would she show up? It had gone past 7.30 now, and the film would start in 10 minutes. Suddenly he could hear footsteps running behind him. He did a quick about-turn and there she was, flapping and flustered. “Sorry I’m late. Mum made a scene and I had to calm her down.” Thelma’s relief that he was still waiting for her was evident even to Neville. “That’s ok. Let’s go in; the film’s going to start soon.” Neville actually didn’t give two hoots about which film was showing. Instead he had started to think about whether he should tentatively reach out and hold Thelma’s hand undercover of the darkness, and his heart had begun to race with anticipation.
