The world didn't end with a bang; it ended with the rising howl of police sirens echoing off wet brick and the cold, crushing realization that everything I had built was gone.
My career. My reputation. My pristine, unblemished life as New York’s most unyielding defense attorney. Erased in ten minutes by the man who had sat at the head of my law firm for six years. I had spent a decade memorizing statutes, perfecting courtroom theatrics, and building an impenetrable fortress around my name.
Now, standing in the rain-soaked alley, I realized my entire career had been nothing more than a golden cage constructed by the man who murdered my father.
"Val, we have to move," Max said, his hand wrapped around my waist like a steel band.
He didn't just hold me—he anchored me, dragging me back from the edge of the emotional abyss swallowing my mind.
"My server..." Mateo stammered, his knuckles white around the blood-stained laptop pressed against his chest. "Val, all the decrypted logs from Eisenhardt’s offshore shell companies... they’re on this drive. If they take it—"
"They won't take anything," Max cut in, his voice an absolute blade of dark command.
He grabbed Mateo’s collar with his free hand, pulling my brother toward the shattered frame of the fire escape window.
"Down the fire escape. Now. Move!"
The rain hit us like cold needles as we scrambled down the rusted metal rungs into the pitch-black alley behind the building.
Below, the armored SUV idling in the shadows looked less like a vehicle and more like a tomb waiting to swallow us whole.
Sienna threw the rear passenger door open from the inside, her silenced sidearm held at a low ready as she scanned the roofs above. "NYPD units just turned onto 84th Street," she barked over the pounding rain.
Ortega’s lead cruiser is two blocks away and closing fast. Get in!"
I shoved Mateo into the leather back seat first, sliding in right behind him while Max brought up the rear, slamming the reinforced steel door shut just as the first flash of red and blue lights illuminated the mouth of the alley.
Sienna focused entirely on the wheel, slamming the gear shift into reverse. The heavy armored tires screeched as the SUV surged backward out of the narrow corridor, spinning 180 degrees into the cross street before roaring south into the storm, avoiding the oncoming patrol routes.
I pressed my back against the leather headrest, my chest heaving, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped beast. Beside me, Mateo was shaking violently, clutching his laptop, staring at the dark blood-stained cuff of my suit jacket.
"Val..." Mateo whispered, his voice cracking with sheer terror. "There were dead men in your living room. Real dead men. Who is this guy? What did you pull me into?"
"He didn't pull you into anything, Mateo," I said, my voice dangerously hollow as I turned my gaze toward the front passenger seat.
Max was sitting in the front, calmly uncliping his empty magazine and slapping a fresh mag into his sidearm with a brutal, practiced efficiency. In the dim amber glow of the dashboard lights, the blood splattered across his collar looked dark as ink.
"You pulled yourself in when you touched those Cayman server logs," Max said without looking back. "Your sister came to save your life. If you want to keep breathing, kid, open that drive and tell me what Klaus managed to wipe before my team intercepted his server traffic."
"Don't talk to him like he's one of your henchmen," I snapped, my legal instincts flaring back to life through the fog of shock. "He’s a civilian!"
Max turned his head slowly, those dark, shattered-ice eyes locking onto mine through the gap between the leather seats.
The predatory stillness in his gaze made the blood in my veins run cold—and sent a sudden, electric heat coiling deep in my stomach.
"He stopped being a civilian the moment he used your father's digital signature to crack Das Schatten-Kartell’s vault," Max purred softly. "And you stopped being an officer of the court the moment Klaus pinned a federal embezzlement charge on your head. Look at your phone, Valeria. See for yourself."
With trembling fingers, I pulled my cell phone from my jacket pocket. The screen flashed with a barrage of automated alert notifications.
FBI / NCIC FLASH ALERT - INTERPOL RED NOTICE PROVISIONAL
SUBJECT: VALERIA DE LA VEGA
CHARGES: FEDERAL MONEY LAUNDERING, CONSPIRACY TO OBSTRUCT JUSTICE, EMBEZZLEMENT
STATUS: ARMED AND DANGEROUS / IMMEDIATE ARREST REQUIRED
A cold wave of nausea washed over me. I dropped the phone onto the leather seat as if it had burned my skin.
It was surgical. Klaus hadn't just framed me—he had used my father's old, sealed accounts, the ones he had manipulated ten years ago, to make it look as if I had been carrying on my father's alleged crimes from inside Eisenhardt & Associates. Every case I had won, every high-stakes settlement I had processed, every fee I had collected was now recontextualized as syndicate money laundering. Ten years of uncompromising work turned into evidence against me in seconds.
"He took my name," I whispered, the words choking in my throat as hot tears pricked the corners of my eyes. "He took my father's life, and now he took my name."
Before I could sink deeper into the suffocating darkness, a large, warm hand reached back from the front seat, wrapping around my trembling knee with crushing, possessive strength.
Max stared at me through the rearview mirror, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fire that demanded my absolute attention.
"He took a shadow, Valeria," Max said, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly baritone that seemed to vibrate straight into my bones. "He didn't take you. Your name meant nothing in that courtroom. It was just armor you wore because you were afraid of the dark."
"I am not afraid of anything," I spat, my voice rising in fierce, defensive fury as I glared back at his reflection.
"Good," Max purred, a slow, devastating smile touching his lips. "Because where we're going, light doesn't exist."
An automated dispatch prompt chimed softly from the dashboard console as Sienna wove the heavy SUV through the slick streets of the Financial District, steering clear of primary traffic cameras. "Ortega’s setting up checkpoints at all bridge and tunnel exits out of Manhattan. The Feds have automated license-plate recognition active across the entire tri-state area."
"Ortega’s hunting for a defense lawyer and an escaped convict," Max replied, his grip on my knee tightening slightly before he finally let go, leaving my skin burning where his fingers had rested. "He isn't looking for dead people."
He reached over to the central console, tapping a sequence into an encrypted satellite communicator. "Sienna, head for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Pier 42."
Mateo blinked, looking up from his laptop. "Pier 42? That's an abandoned industrial shipyard. It’s been condemned for five years."
"It’s condemned on city property records," Max corrected calmly. "Underneath the waterline, it’s a dark-net communications bunker and the central command post for my entire operation."
I leaned forward, resting my forearms against the center console, invading Max's space just as he had invaded mine in that interrogation room. "And what exactly is your operation, Max? You're not just a con artist or a fugitive. You have tactical gear, satellite overrides, and a kill squad on your tail. Who are you really?"
Max tilted his head, looking down at me as the vehicle glided into the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge overhead. The rain hammered against the roof, wrapping us in an isolated world of thunder and slick black asphalt.
"I’m the ghost your boss created ten years ago when he ordered the hit on your father," Max said, his tone devoid of all warmth, leaving only a cold, lethal promise. "Your father wasn't the only one in that room, Valeria. My father was the auditor who signed off on those accounts. They killed him too. And for ten years, I’ve been dismantling Klaus Eisenhardt’s empire piece by piece."
He leaned in close, his hot breath brushing my ear, sending a shiver straight down my spine.
"I didn't bring you into my world to destroy you, Counselor," he whispered, his eyes locking onto mine with absolute, terrifying possession. "I brought you here to help me finish the execution."
