Rai’s pov.
I came back from my ride the washing machine was on that’s weird Molly said she would be out all day. I went for a shower and got ready for dinner. Ok time to put my big girl panties on and face Jace. Granted when I’ve seen him at the farm he’s stayed away from me and I don’t think he’ll do anything in front of his family, but the little girl in me is worried about seeing him. Shay: “I know your worried about seeing him, but go out there with your head held high. Your a strong independent woman that has nothing to be ashamed of.”
I know she’s right I take a deep breath and walk into the dining room with my head up.
Molly: “Hello sweetie you look lovely. Did you enjoy your ride?” “Thank you, my ride was great Buddy is getting cheeky and Midnight is a very spirited mare. I’m going to have to get on her soon. Thank you Luke for the name plates for all the animals that was very sweet of you.”
Molly and Lizzie looked confused.
Luke: “Well as long as Midnight is safe to ride that’s ok. As for the name plates I don’t know what your talking about it wasn’t me!!”
Oh!!!! Jace coughed choking on his food, after a mouthful of water he said in a quiet voice.
“I made them.”
Then carried on eating. Well crap what am I supposed to do with that!!!!
“Thank you they are lovely. Molly you should have said you had washing to do, I could have done it as I know you was busy today.”
Before Molly could say anything. Jace: “Your welcome. I used the washing machine.”
He then got up and started to clear the table.
Lizzie: “Ok who are you and what have you done with my brother.”
“As I said to mum and dad earlier I’ve changed and grown up.” He then started to do the washing up. Oh double crap.
For the next 4 months we didn’t speak much to each other unless we had to. He respected my wishes and kept his distance. As well as working in the fields, he did things to help his parents, doing his own washing, his share of the washing up and helping his dad with pack member issues. A few times Stephanie tried to say something bitchy to me but he told her to shut up. On one hand that annoyed me as I should be fighting my own battles, but on the other one I liked it. At one point I asked Bain and Kale why Jace did what he did before. But all they would tell me was that Jace was very confused at the time and he really regretted what he did. Well I have to say that at that point they where as bout as useful as a chocolate tea pot!!!
Luke is getting a tractor for working in the fields. He gave me Buddy and Midnight as a belated birthday present, just after Jace moved back home. Over the last 4 months I’ve been trying to ride her. I’ve always been able to get the driving harness (for working with the plough in the fields) on her no problem, but when I try to get a saddle on or try to get on her bareback Midnight takes off across the paddock bucking.
I got home after another frustrating day with Midnight, to find a pile of books, outside my room with a note.
‘Rai I hope you find something useful in these, for Midnights issue. Please don’t take this the wrong way, I’m sure you’ll find out what is wrong I just thought they might help.’
Yours J. X
I picked up the books and went into my room, sat down and opened the one on the top and flipped through it, that one didn’t help much so I went on to the next one, this one was about natural horsemanship after reading it for a while I think I’ve worked out what the problem is. I looked at the clock oh crap dinner’s in 20 minutes and I haven’t had a shower yet. I had a quick shower and got dressed for dinner. Jace was setting the table for dinner.
“Jace thank you for the books, I think I’ve found the issue and figured out what to do to help Midnight.”
“Your welcome, I’m sorry I didn’t get them to you sooner, the delivery took longer than I expected.”
I didn’t know what to say, so I smile at him and go into the kitchen. Molly, Luke and Lizzie are all in the kitchen, they overheard us talking Luke left smiling at me. Molly and Lizzie looked at me then each other and started laughing. I just got myself a drink and went back to the dining room. Ok it’s time to try to be friends with Jace.
“Jace how’s the corn crop coming on?”
Thankfully no one acknowledged the change, just waited for his response. Once he’d finished his mouthful of food.
“It seems to be growing ok, but the slugs are becoming a bit of a problem.”
“Oh yea they love the leaf’s. In the shed there should be big bags of salt. Put a big line down around the hole crop, they hate salt so won’t go across it.”
“Uh great thank you, I’ll do that first thing in the morning. I wondered why there was so much salt out there. When I asked the farm worker’s they had no idea.”
He winced as he realised why. “Oh they wouldn’t know what a slug is, if even if it jumped up and slapped them around the face.” Everyone burst out laughing. I had tears in my eyes, so did Molly and Lizzie. Luke and Jace got them self’s under control, but made the mistake of looking at each other and that set them off again.
Lizzie: “I know who I’d like to see, slapped around the face with a slug!!!”
Jace: “Oh god lz thanks a lot I can’t get that mental picture out of my head.”
He started laughing again. I got up to clear the table.
Molly: “Why don’t you 3 go watch tv? Luke and I will do the washing up.”
Jace put Game of Thrones on we had started watching it a couple of weeks ago and he knew I was hooked on it. We watched a couple of episode’s in comfortable silence I started to nod off, said good night and went to bed. Being friends doesn’t seem to be to bad.
