Elena pov
The night was quiet. Too quiet.
I woke up gasping, my skin cold, my heart racing like I’d been running through a dream I couldn’t remember. The moonlight spilled through the window, pale and soft, painting shadows across the room.
And then… I heard it.
She’s awake.
I froze. The voice wasn’t mine. It wasn’t in the room either.
It was inside me.
My breath hitched. “Who’s there?” I whispered, glancing around.
Silence. Then another whisper — softer, closer.
She looks scared.
I jolted, clutching the blanket. My pulse was everywhere. “Who’s saying that?!”
The door creaked open.
He stepped in — Alaric, tall and silent, his eyes glinting like the edge of a blade.
And that same voice… that same tone… echoed again inside my head.
She’s trembling.
I stumbled back. “What—what did you just say?”
He frowned. “I didn’t say anything.”
I blinked, shaking my head. “Yes, you did! You said—” My voice broke. “You said I’m trembling.”
He stared at me — really stared — as if trying to see through me. “I didn’t speak.”
The air between us grew heavier.
My lips trembled. “Then why can I hear your voice?”
He said nothing. Just watched me, his jaw tightening, confusion flickering in his eyes. For the first time, he didn’t look dangerous. He looked lost.
The silence between us buzzed — not empty, but alive. I could feel something shifting, something moving beneath my skin.
The mark on my neck burned faintly, pulsing with his stare. And then, just for a moment, I felt it — not his words, but his emotion. A flicker of confusion, disbelief, and something darker that tasted like hunger and restraint all tangled together.
He took a step back, his hand brushing his temple briefly, as if trying to quiet a noise that wouldn’t stop.
“Get some rest,” he said, his voice low but uncertain. “You need strength.”
I didn’t reply. I just watched him as he turned and disappeared into the darkness beyond the door.
When he left, I thought the room would fall silent again.
But it didn’t.
Even as the shadows swallowed his figure, I could still feel him — faintly, like a heartbeat pulsing somewhere far away. And then, like an echo drifting through fog…
She’s afraid.
My breath caught.
It wasn’t him speaking aloud. It wasn’t even a voice anymore — it was thought.
And I heard it. I felt it.
I pressed my palms against my ears, as if that could stop it, but it wasn’t coming from the outside. It was something else — something buried under my skin, thrumming where his bite had marked me.
My chest tightened. The air felt too thin.
I didn’t understand what was happening to me… or to him.
But I knew one thing — whatever that connection was, it wasn’t supposed to exist.
And deep down, beneath the fear, a single thought pulsed through me:
this was only the beginning.
