Serena's POV
He held my gaze. “I wonder how good that personality of yours is, that it couldn't prevent Adrian Whitmore from divorcing you.”
Aunt Rose gasped. “Divorce?”
She turned to me. “You're the Whitmore's ex-wife?”
“It's not what you—” Elliot butted in but was shunned immediately.
“She has her own mouth, Elliot.” Finn cut him off. Then he turned to me, “If you're Adrian's ex-wife who couldn't conceive then what is someone like Elliot who needs an heir doing with you?”
The charismatic Ezekiel was speechless.
“It seems a lot has happened in New York since we left, Rose.” Zeke muttered.
Mr Vance turned to me. “I knew you looked familiar. Explain yourself.”
I remarked, “I didn't know the Vance family are discrimative of divorcees.”
“Not really.” Jen replied. “We're only discriminative of divorcees chased out from their previous family looking for another influential family to perch on.”
“Uncle Jen, have I perhaps offended you?” I asked, ready to run my mouth if it weren't for Elliot who grabbed my arm.
“I asked you a question, didn't I?” Mr Vance's icy tone pierced through the silence.
I sighed and turned to him, “Yes. I'm Adrian Whitmore's ex-wife. We had a misunderstanding that led to our mutual decision of getting a divorce.”
“Does this in any way, stand against my love for Elliot?”
Everyone's sharp gaze pierced through me. I was shaking within but I had to maintain a good composure.
I knew what getting the inheritance meant to Elliot, and I also knew how far the ten million dollars will go for me and my child.
“How do you plan on giving him an heir?” Finn spoke. “I don't care whose ex-wife you are, but if a man like Adrian can discard you then I see no reason why Elliot should keep you by his side.”
“Finn—” Elliot started.
“Besides, didn't Adrian recently get engaged to his pregnant fiancee?” He smirked. “You have been married to him for years and you have no child of your own.”
That stung. Elliot felt me tremble.
“You can't exactly say that, Finn. Those could be rumours.” Aunt Rose came to my rescue, “Tell us dear, is it true that you're infertile?”
I bit my lips.
Elliot said, “It's not true. She simply lost two pregnancies while with Adrian. Their divorce was as a result of his cheating nature, seeing that he got someone else pregnant while they were still married.”
Silence reigned.
“Y’all forced me to get married. I have brought my wife-to-be and all you can do is probe into her life for every single stain?” Elliot's voice was menacing. “Is there any of you here who is perfect?”
“Are you saying she can conceive?” Mr Vance demanded. “I asked you to get married to bear an heir, not to paint your wife the most gracious.”
“Yes. She can conceive.” Elliot answered.
Finn laughed.
“What are you gonna do, Dad?” Finn scoffed. “Are you going to pretend like you haven't heard people talking?”
“I just said she can conceive.” Elliot said. “Are you deaf?”
“We'll have to confirm that.” Jenson spoke. “Do you agree with me, Mr Vance?”
“Yes, of course.” Mr Vance nodded. “I have no problem with her being Adrian's ex-wife. I just want to be sure that her infertility are actually rumours and not the truth.”
My heart skipped.
“The family doctor will arrive here in two days time. You'll be checked thoroughly.” Mr Vance decided and everyone continued eating.
Aunt Rose changed the subject and spoke at length about her time in London. After dinner, we moved to the sitting room and listened to Uncle Zeke play the guitar.
Suddenly, I felt Elliot's arm around me, pulling me close. I stared at him, only to find him staring elsewhere. When I traced his gaze, I found Finn acting lovey-dovey with Karen, who was seated on his thigh.
I still couldn't wrap my head around how she ended up with him. Could it be what she was keeping from me? But how could she? She had clearly said they'd ended things. Did Karen really betray me?
“Well, enough of the music!” Uncle Zeke exclaimed as desserts were served. “Let our to-be couples entertain us!”
Elliot immediately declined. “That's not necessary, Uncle. Serena is getting tired. We'll be leaving shortly.”
“Yes, that's means you'll have to entertain us first!” Uncle Zeke giggled. “C’mon, get over here!”
“Uncle Zeke—” Elliot was about to object when Uncle Zeke grabbed my wrist, yanking me from Elliot's grip. The effect sent ripples across my abdomen, making me wince in pain while grabbing my belly.
Karen rose abruptly.
Elliot was by my side in the next moment and everyone's eyes were on me.
“Are you alright? I pulled your hand, why are you gripping your stomach?” Uncle Zeke questioned.
I quickly forced a smile. “It must be a mild indisgestion.”
“Great!” Uncle Zeke exclaimed. “Show us what you've got!”
He left us standing and resigned to a couch.
Elliot looked into my eyes. It was as if I could hear his thoughts. He had no idea what to do.
I walked towards where the guitar lay. It was beside a set of speakers which was previously connected to a blues love song with which Uncle Zeke strung his guitar.
After turning it on, I walked back to Elliot, placed one of his hands on my waist and the locked the other in mine.
“Follow my steps and move to the rhythm.” I whispered.
“I don't dance.” Elliot mumbled underneath his breath. His expression said so and I could see Finn laughing his guts out from the corner of my eyes.
“I have never danced in fact.”
“Well, you will.” I told him. “You asked me to lead and you will follow.”
He sighed. I could see that this was painful for him to do.
“Fine. We can just decline.” I let go off him and was ready to walk back to the couch, when he held my wrist, bringing me back.
“What should I do?”
