chapter 5

The group stood in stunned silence on the porch, the oppressive darkness of the Damon house looming behind them. The night was eerily quiet, the only sound their ragged breathing and the distant hum of cicadas. Lisa was gone, swallowed by the house, and the weight of their loss hung heavily in the air. Phillip’s face was pale, his eyes wide and hollow. He stared at the closed door, his mind reeling. *How had this happened?* He felt a deep, gnawing guilt, knowing that if he had acted faster, things might have been different. The guilt was almost as unbearable as the fear. Margot stood beside him, her body trembling. Tears streamed down her face, but she made no move to wipe them away. Her hands clenched into fists at her sides, the knuckles white. The horror of what they had just witnessed was still fresh, and the reality of Lisa’s absence felt like a physical blow. Alex was pacing back and forth, his face set in a grim expression. “This is insane,” he said, his voice tight with frustration. “We need to go back in and find her.” Phillip turned to him, his eyes dark with anger and despair. “Are you kidding me? The house is a death trap. We barely made it out alive. What makes you think we can just go back in and get her?” “I don’t care if it’s a death trap!” Alex shot back, his voice rising. “She’s our friend. We can’t just leave her in there.” “Look around!” Margot snapped, her voice cracking. “It’s not just a house. It’s a nightmare. We can’t go back in there. The creature will—” “The creature will what?” Alex interrupted, his eyes blazing. “Eat us? It already tried to kill us, Phillip! We have to do something!” Phillip’s face was flushed with anger, his emotions raw. “You think I don’t know that? I was there, too! But charging back in there without a plan is suicide!” Dorian, who had been standing silently off to the side, spoke up, her voice barely audible. “Maybe… maybe there’s another way. We could—” “Another way?” Alex cut her off, his frustration boiling over. “There’s no other way. Lisa’s dead because of us, and we need to fix it.” Margot turned to Phillip, her eyes pleading. “We need to get help. Call the police, tell them what happened.” “The police?” Phillip’s voice was bitter. “What are we supposed to tell them? That we went into a haunted house and one of us got taken by a monster? They won’t believe us.” Alex’s face was set in grim determination. “We can’t just give up. We have to do something.” Phillip’s gaze hardened. “And what exactly do you propose? We go back in there and hope for the best? Lisa is gone, Alex. We have to face that.” Alex’s fists clenched, his anger turning to desperation. “I’m not giving up on her. I can’t. Not like this.” Margot stepped between them, her voice trembling but firm. “We need to calm down and think. Fighting won’t help us. We need to get out of here, regroup, and figure out what to do next.” Phillip’s shoulders slumped, the weight of his guilt and the gravity of their situation hitting him hard. He looked at the house, its dark silhouette against the night sky, and then back at Alex and Margot. “Fine. We’ll get out of here. But we need a plan. We need to figure out what this place is and how to stop it.” Alex nodded, though his expression remained tight with anger and grief. “Okay. We leave now. But we come back with a plan. I swear it.” The group made their way down the porch steps, each step heavy with the weight of their loss. The night air was cool against their skin, a stark contrast to the oppressive heat they had just escaped. As they moved away from the house, Phillip felt a pang of guilt and helplessness. They had failed Lisa, and now they were left with nothing but the haunting memory of what had happened. The drive back to town was somber. No one spoke much, each lost in their own thoughts, their minds grappling with the horror they had just experienced. Phillip kept glancing at the rearview mirror, half-expecting to see the Damon house receding into the distance, but the darkness obscured it from view. When they finally reached the edge of town, the sky was beginning to lighten with the first hints of dawn. They pulled into a parking lot, the exhaustion and emotional strain evident on their faces. “We need to stick together,” Phillip said quietly as they sat in the car, the gravity of their situation settling in. “And we need to understand what we’re dealing with.” Margot nodded, her face pale but resolute. “We’ll find a way. For Lisa.” Alex looked out the window, his face a mask of determined sorrow. “We owe it to her to try.” As they sat in the car, the sun began to rise, casting a weak light over the town. It was a new day, but for Phillip, Margot, and Alex, it was a day filled with uncertainty and fear. They had escaped the Damon house, but the real challenge was just beginning. They had to confront the darkness that lurked within and find a way to rescue their friend, no matter the cost. -
