Ravenna.
My breath caught. “What?!” I snapped. “Why?"
Even though I was still very much attracted to him sexually, I honestly didn't want anything to do with him anymore. What would the pack members, Ryder, and the Queen think of me if they found out about last night? And with the way my cunt was still clenching hard now and my desires shooting through the roof, my best bet was to just stay away from him.
My gaze shifted briefly to the Alpha king. He was relaxed back in his seat, arms crossed over his chest and munching slowly on his food, his eyes never leaving me like he knew just how much I wanted to get away from him.
"How could I be his personal assistant?" I asked, focusing back on Ryder.
With a tight smile on his face, Ryder replied, "Because I wanted you to, especially since you had nothing doing presently."
I had once begged him to let me find a job in the past to keep my mind busy, but he disagreed, and now he was willing to let me work for his father. Why?
"Well… I haven't done any managerial job in the past and I don't have any certificates either." My father had not let me go to school like his other children. He said it was useless to waste such a fortune on an illegitimate daughter.
He held my hand tightly. "It doesn't matter, babe." His fake sweetness made my skin crawl. "You are smart and that is enough. I know you could do this. I'm sure father does not care about your experience or certificates, or do you, father?" He stared at his father.
The king remained silent for a while, his brows furrowed like he was giving it deep thought.
I gripped the side of my dress, squeezing it like paper as my pulse roared loudly in my ears. I prayed that he refused.
"Well... I think—"
"Don't make me laugh, Ryder!" The Queen blurted out, cutting him off sharply. Was I the only person who thought that she didn't regard the Alpha from the little time I had spent here? There was this awkward feeling between them too. No marital connection, just like Ryder and I.
"You want this girl here to be your father's personal assistant? Someone that couldn't do anything right? I'm sure she would only ruin things for him. Besides," she dropped her cutleries sharply, the sound of them clashing against her glass plate echoing through the room, "she should be focusing on getting pregnant instead. Produce an heir to continue this family legacy. A barren woman like her—"
"Barren woman!" The word slipped past my lips before my mind could catch up.
I didn't know what came over me, but I just couldn't take it anymore. I couldn't sit there while her words shredded my soul apart. I slammed my fists on the table, my anger rising higher.
"I have had enough of you barren shaming me, and I am going to take it anymore!"
Ryder leaned closer, his hand gripping my thighs under the table. "Ravenna, keep quiet."
"Leave me the hell alone!" I kicked his hand away and jumped to my feet.
I was literally glaring at the Queen, whose lips were parted in disbelief, like I was a mad woman. "I'm not barren, okay. The only reason why I haven't gotten pregnant is that your son wouldn't lay a finger on me since we got married. Maybe you should start questioning his fertility instead."
"Ravenna!" He sprang to his feet.
I stopped talking since I had already made myself clear. I folded my arms over my heaving chest, my head thrown to the side.
"I'm sorry Mother, Ravenna is just—" he tried to touch her across the table, but she raised her hand and stood.
"I understand," she said quietly and walked away.
"Mother," he called after her, but she didn't respond. She just climbed up the stairs, her feet hitting the floor sharply like a declaration of war.
I knew things would get more tense and messy from then on, but at least she knew not to speak carelessly to me anymore.
"I'm so sorry about this, father." Ryder's voice was low. "My wife is just going through some rough phases recently."
And only then did I realize that I had just caused a huge scene in the presence of the Alpha king himself.
"I understand, son."
"Well..." Humiliation burned down my cheeks. "I'm sorry for the outburst, Alpha. I just—"
"You don't have to explain yourself." His voice was dismissive. "Sometimes letting out the rage is the best way to feel better afterward."
Why—why did it sound like he was proud of my actions instead of defending his wife? Now, this was strange.
I forced myself to look at him, and he didn't look angry one bit. And I was right, he was proud. The corner of his lips lifted in a devilish and satisfied smirk that made him look so handsome that my legs became weak and my throat dried.
I sat down, gripped the glass of water before me, and threw it down, suddenly feeling heat in my p***y. I rubbed my thighs together desperately in a futile attempt to get rid of the heat.
What the hell is wrong with you, Ravenna?
Focus, Ravenna. Focus.
Tense silence blanketed the room as we resumed eating, but as for me, I was just so f*****g horny.
"But then, son..." The king spoke again. "Why wouldn't you touch your wife? Did you think she is not attractive enough?"
Ryder choked on his food, letting out a guttural cough. He grabbed a glass of water and gulped it down.
I rolled my eyes at him. Too much drama for a simple question. But then… he was a coward in his father's presence.
Once he had calmed down, he started stammering. "Well, I think—she—is attractive. We—are—just—taking things slow." He stared back at me. "Isn't that so, darling?"
"Sure. We were simply taking things slow, Alpha."
I played along with him because I didn't even care if he touched me or not. Gone were those days that I craved his touch. Now, I only wanted the touch of one man. The man whose name I dared not mention. A man who was not only forbidden but dangerous.
He nodded, clearly not believing us. "Fair enough."
Then he dabbed the napkin on his lips and stood. "I think I'm full. I will get to work now."
My gaze flicked to his plate and I noticed he had barely eaten anything.
We stood, bowing.
"Alright, Father," Ryder murmured.
He started walking away, then turned back at the foot of the stairs. "And concerning the personal assistant."
My chest slammed. I clasped my fingers together in front of me like it was the only thing tethering me to sanity.
"I will help you look for someone else, Father," Ryder said meekly. "I will put out an ad as soon as I get to the office."
"Don't worry. Ravenna would do. She is exactly," he grinned mischevously, "the type of personal assistant that I need. Resume at 8 A. M tomorrow."
My throat went dry.
