Chapter 10: Public Declaration
After class, students flooded the cafeteria for lunch. Tyler sat with his friends, enjoying his meal. Suddenly, Rachel stood in front of the cafeteria, her voice loud and clear.
"Attention everyone! I want to make it official: Tyler is my boyfriend!"
The cafeteria fell silent. Tyler's eyes widened in shock, and he almost choked on his food. Lily's face twisted in disgust as she gazed at Tyler.
Other girls whispered among themselves, "Is it true?" "Did Tyler agree to this?" Tyler quickly regained composure and denied Rachel's claim.
"Whoa, hold on. Rachel, that's not true. We're just friends."
Rachel's face turned bright red as embarrassment washed over her. The cafeteria erupted in whispers and snickers.
As the cafeteria erupted in whispers and snickers, Rachel's embarrassment deepened. She tried to salvage the situation, but her words only made it worse.
"No, no, I meant... we were just talking about... uh... plans!"
Her stammering only fueled the laughter and whispers. Students pointed and giggled, enjoying the spectacle.
Rachel's eyes welled up with tears as she realized her humiliation. She quickly fled the cafeteria, leaving behind a sea of murmuring students.
The scene left a lasting impression on the students, and whispers about Rachel's crush on Tyler continued to spread.
Rachel stormed out of the cafeteria, her embarrassment and anger simmering. She sought out Tyler, determined to confront him.
"Tyler, what's going on?" Rachel demanded, her voice low but intense. "Why did you deny us?"
Tyler sighed, feeling guilty. "Rachel, I didn't mean to hurt you, but... we’re just friends. I didn't agree to be your boyfriend."
Rachel's eyes flashed with anger. "You could have just played along. Now everyone thinks I'm some clueless girl."
Tyler shook his head. "I'm sorry, Rachel. I didn't mean to embarrass you."
The confrontation left both of them uncomfortable, their friendship strained.
___
After the confrontation with Tyler, Rachel's behavior toward Lily shifted dramatically. She no longer fawned over Lily or catered to her demands.
Lily noticed the change and confronted Rachel. "What's with the attitude? You used to be so friendly."
Rachel smirked, her eyes gleaming with sarcasm. "Oh, that? It was all an act. I was just playing you, trying to get close to Tyler."
Lily's eyes widened in surprise, her expression a mix of anger and amusement. "You were using me? How cute."
The dynamics between Rachel and Lily had shifted. Rachel no longer pretended to be subservient, and Lily realized she'd been played.
She took a step closer to Rachel, her voice taking on a sly tone. "But let's be real, Rachel. You're still hurt about Tyler denying you. You're vulnerable."
Lily's words struck a nerve, and Rachel's expression faltered. Lily seized the opportunity, her voice dripping with manipulation.
"Let's make a deal, Rachel. I'll keep your little secret, and in return, you'll do something for me."
Rachel's eyes narrowed, but Lily's words had struck a chord.
Lily's eyes gleamed with a plan. "Rachel, I want you to... befriend Emily and get close to her."
Rachel's eyes widened in surprise. "Why Emily?"
Lily's smile grew wider. "Because Emily's art is gaining attention, and I want you to... 'accidentally' sabotage her work."
Rachel hesitated, weighing her options. Would she agree to Lily's request?
