Chapter 2
****************
His mother's announcement rendered Sterling speechless. People might say many things about his stepdad, but an unfaithful husband wasn't one of them.
Sterling pulled back and sat on the couch to read the pinky letter; while only scanning, he said in a loud voice, whoever wrote this must be lying and definitely wanted something in return. While he expected his stepdad to be in agreement, he only shook his head in disagreement. Jack Reynold says people change and lives change, but if she wanted anything in return, she could have reached me many years ago while waiting till she is more.
Mrs Sharon Reynold yelled in pain and anger. She might just want to ruin your political ambitions. Don't you think so? Or it seems to overreact here. Can someone just speak up? The silence in the room was so heavy that someone's heartbeat could be heard clearly without any disturbance. After a few minutes of silence, she says she might be saying this now, knowing you will be willing to pay her so she can keep it from the media to get hold of the information. “
At this point, Jack Reynold just speaks up, calming first to her mother. Ava Smith is already late. He disagrees with Sharon's claim. Why wouldn't he disagree that there were good, honorable people in the world? He didn't think there were many of them. Sterling:“ I am assuming Mom is upset because you want to meet this supposed daughter.”
I’m not upset; he wants to get to the root of this matter. Just that he wants to do it now. If the media or Michael Benjamin got hold of this information, they could hurt his campaign. And it might not be true.”
Now he clearly understands that his mother is adamant about stopping her husband. Even before Jack Reynolds had announced his intention to run for the presidency, the media and public had scrutinized the Reynolds family. As a family that had originally amassed a fortune in the 20th century while rubbing elbows with the Kennedy family and the Ford family, Jack, himself the son of a famous business tycoon, drew even more attention to the family when he married Sterling's mother, the daughter of an English aristocrat.” I think it would be better to wait until after the election in November. It has been this long already, so a little longer won't matter. "Don't you agree, Sterling?”
Nothing like being put on the spot. For a moment remained silent, mulling over how to reply. You have a tight schedule for the next several months, and in the meantime, hire someone to learn more about this …. Sterling glanced down at the letter again. Smith Taylor. “
Jack Reynold taps his hand on the deck. Something he did when he was deep in thought.
“My mind is made up. I've already put a call to Kennedy Thomas to see about rearranging my schedule,” Jack Reynolds explained, referring to his campaign adviser, Thomas. I know you are against this, but this is something I need to do; I won't be able to rest until I do.”
Sterling stood and walked around the room filled with untold questioning, knowing his stepdad was a man of few words and having made up his mind. Any attempts to change it were nearly impossible. So convincing him to wait till November to meet this woman was unlikely. That didn't mean, however, that he couldn't intervene and help defuse the situation.
Instead of going to see her yourself, why don't we have someone arrange a private meeting? Sterling suggested turning back to face Reynold. “Maybe she could meet you here or at one of your other houses. Then there would be less of a chance of someone seeing the two of you together. And virtually no chance of the media or Drake getting wind of this.”
While not ideal, the plan was better than Jack’s. "This is my daughter!” Jack immediately came to his feet. I'm not going to hire a messenger to meet with her. She deserved better than that.”
Obviously, his stepfather didn't entertain the idea that this was all a lie. In his own mind, Jack had already decided Sophia Smith was his daughter. And for Jack's sake, Sterling hoped it was true. That this isn't a trick to get money from the family.
Regardless, that didn't mean Sterling planned on blindly accepting the fact.” What if I go and see her ?” He didn't want to play Messenger, but it would help protect Jack from negative media outcomes.
My schedule at the end of this month is light, at least lighter than usual. I'll talk to her and set something up for you.
His mother's smile for the first time since the whole conversation started. I agree with Sterling. "Let Sterling handle this for you.” A face-to-face meeting with Miss Smith might be enough to prove whether she was your daughter or just someone out for something.
Maybe she [ Smith] learned about your relationship with your mother now, and she wants to take advantage of that? She could have written the letter and mailed it out herself.
Obviously, his stepfather hadn't thought of that possibility. Several seconds passed before Jack reluctantly nodded. ” Do it. But if you don't make it happen, I will.
Sterling didn't care why his stepfather agreed with his suggestion. He just wanted to take care of the problem and keep it all out of the media.

Stretching, Smith rubbed her table and used the other hand to adjust his office chair to relax his back from the pain of sitting in one spot for a long time. She still has half a stack of physics tests to correct. Unfortunately, she still couldn't focus. In fact, she hadn't been able to focus for the last three months. Not since her mother dropped that bookshelf about her father and turned her entire life upside down. After spending her whole life believing that her Father died in ancient times, Smith didn't know how to feel now that she knew the truth. If that wasn't enough, he was also an exceedingly rich and powerful man who might be the next President of the United States. News like that would mess with anyone's head.
“Apparently, anytime she remembers the pains her mother went through raising her as a single mother, tears run down her face uncontrollably. Who will be my supporter? Why didn't she keep the secret from her? Where to really pick up my life from at this point? As she pounded, the bell rang. Break time was over, and the students started coming back to the classroom. She quickly used her drenched towels to clean her face and rushed to the restroom to clean up.
