Driven Point of View Driven halted his car in front of the lab where he worked. As he switched off the engine, a long, heavy breath escaped him along with the quietness of the car. His heart felt unbearably heavy, weighed down by emotions he could never outrun. And in the quiet of the car, Joelien last words echoed through his mind, sharp as broken glass: “I am no longer your problem anymore.” The words repeated like a broken record. Everything from her past with Driven came rushing back to the surface of her heart. How could he just show up like that and suddenly act so caring? He hadn’t cared the night their daughter died — when she needed him most. Instead, he had been getting drunk at a bar and sleeping with Braire, a complete stranger. Matthew was the one who had been there for her that night, holding her while she fell apart in the hospital. Driven had only stayed a short while before disappearing again. No one knew where he went, and that had shattered her even more. How dare he care about her now? How dare he ask about her health? She pulled Spirit to a halt and slid off, removing the saddle with shaking hands and placing it back on its rack. She turned the horse loose so he could drink and eat. She needed to get away from here. Blinded by tears, Joelien stumbled back toward the old farmhouse, her only thought to grab her keys and get the hell out. Driven was on this farm, and she refused to be anywhere near him while he was here. As she approached the house, she looked up and saw her cousin standing in front of it. A wave of relief washed over her. Lucas had come at exactly the right moment. She broke into a run. Lucas noticed her immediately, but his expression shifted from surprise to deep concern when he saw the brokenness in her eyes. Joelien threw herself into his arms, burying her face in his chest as sobs tore through her like a little girl. Lucas didn’t say a word. He simply wrapped his strong arms around her and held her tighter. For months she had tried to avoid Driven, tried to move on with her life. And now he had appeared out of nowhere, acting like he still had the right to care. It killed her to see him. It killed her to hear his voice. How could he do this to her? After he slept with another woman and got her pregnant while they were still mourning their daughter? “Cuz,” Lucas said softly, still holding her. “What happened?” She pressed her face deeper into his chest, her throat tight, barely able to speak. “Is it your anemia?” he asked, worry thick in his voice. She shook her head. “No… it’s Driven.” Lucas pulled back slightly, lifting her chin with gentle fingers so he could see her tear-streaked face. His green eyes darkened with anger. “What do you mean?” he asked. “What did he do? The way you look right now… what the hell did that man say to you?” His jaw tightened. “That bastard… he has no business with you after what he did.” Joelien let out a heavy, shaky sigh as fresh tears spilled down her cheeks. “Damn it,” Lucas muttered. “Come on. Let’s go to my place. You shouldn’t be alone right now, Cuz.” She didn’t argue. When Lucas took her hand and led her toward his truck in the driveway, she followed silently.
