Episode 5: the unseen enemy

The night air was thick with tension as I stumbled through the trees, my heart pounding with every step. The pack had been attacked—rogue wolves had breached the perimeter, and I had been sent to handle the situation. But something felt off, something I couldn’t put my finger on. The scent of blood mixed with the sharp tang of fear, and it gnawed at me, stirring something dark in my gut. I arrived at the clearing, my breath catching in my throat when I saw the scene before me. Aria. Her body lay limp in the center of the clearing, surrounded by the scattered remains of the rogue wolf. Blood stained the ground, but it was the aura surrounding her that caught my attention—the swirling, dark energy that crackled in the air. I froze for a moment, uncertainty creeping into my chest. The power radiating from her was unlike anything I had ever felt. It was chaotic, volatile, and familiar in the worst way. A shadow—the kind that lurked at the edge of your vision, always just beyond your reach. That was what I felt from her. The curse. I moved toward her cautiously, instinctively keeping my distance from the energy swirling around her. But as I neared, I felt a strange pull, a magnetic force that seemed to want to draw me in, to touch the darkness within her. Her eyes flickered open, and she gasped for air, her body jerking as if she’d just been pulled from the edge of a dream. “Kael…” she murmured weakly, her voice thick with confusion and exhaustion. I knelt beside her, brushing her hair from her face. “What happened?” “I—I didn’t… it wasn’t me.” Her words were slurred, and I could barely make sense of them as she struggled to sit up. I could see it now—her eyes were wild with fear, her pupils blown wide, and her breath came in shallow gasps. The power wasn’t just hers anymore; it was something else, something darker, creeping out of the depths of her being, wrapping around us both. The rogue wolf—what was left of it—lay in a bloody heap nearby. I could feel the death of it in my bones, but there was something strange about the way it had died. The body was charred, as if it had been burned from the inside out. That wasn’t the work of any regular wolf. It was the curse. Her curse. I stood up abruptly, my gaze snapping around the clearing. The rogue wolf hadn’t been alone. I could feel eyes on me—on us—from the shadows. I moved to shield Aria instinctively, my body tensing as the air grew thicker, heavier, charged with something dark. It was almost as if the forest itself was holding its breath. And then I saw him. A man stepped out from the shadows, his figure tall and imposing. His eyes glowed an eerie shade of red in the dim light, and I felt the air shift as he approached. There was something about him—something that felt… wrong. The rogue wolf wasn’t just an attack—it had been a message. “Kael Blackthorn,” the man said, his voice smooth but cold. “It seems your little pack is in need of a new leader.” I took a step forward, my fists clenched at my sides. “Who are you?” “I’m someone who knows the truth about your pack,” he replied. “And someone who’s willing to do whatever it takes to bring you down.” His lips curled into a wicked smile. “I’ve been sent to make sure your reign ends, Alpha.” I felt the weight of his words sink in like a heavy stone, and for the first time in my life, I realized I wasn’t just dealing with rogue wolves. There was something much bigger at play here—something within my pack itself. I shot a glance at Aria, who was still on the ground, her hands shaking as she struggled to sit up. Her eyes met mine, a silent plea in them. But she didn’t speak. Not yet. “Who sent you?” I demanded, my voice low and deadly. The man chuckled. “Does it matter? All that matters is that you’re vulnerable. You’ve always been vulnerable, Kael. You’ve been blind to the cracks in your pack. The wolves who resent your leadership, the ones who’ve been waiting for the right moment to strike. They’ve been playing you, pulling your strings, and now…” He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Now, they want to see you fall.” My heart clenched in my chest. “You’re lying.” “I’m not the only one who’s been watching,” he said cryptically. “You’ve always had enemies inside your own walls. But this curse of yours, Aria…” His gaze shifted to her, his expression darkening. “It’s more than just a family’s burden. It’s a weapon. A weapon that’s been manipulated for generations. And now, it’s time for it to be used.” I took another step toward him, my teeth gritting. I wasn’t about to let this man taunt me any longer. “I’ll deal with you later.” Before I could take another step, the ground trembled beneath my feet. Aria’s body tensed, and I could feel the power inside her building, growing out of control. I reached out to steady her, but she recoiled, her eyes wide with terror. “Kael, I can’t stop it,” she whispered hoarsely. “It’s too much. I can’t control it.” “Aria,” I said, my voice strained as I tried to keep the fear from showing. “You have to fight it. You have to fight them.” But the rogue wolf wasn’t the only threat now. As I watched in horror, more figures emerged from the shadows—wolves, their eyes glowing with an unnatural light. They circled us like vultures, their low growls vibrating through the air. I stood protectively in front of Aria, my heart racing. “Stay behind me,” I ordered, my voice low but firm. The rogue wolves advanced, and I could feel the tension crackling in the air, like a storm about to break. And then, just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, the man in front of me spoke again, his voice laced with malicious amusement. “You really think you can stop this?” he sneered. “You’ve lost before the battle’s even begun.” I didn’t have time to respond. A low growl pierced the air as the rogue wolves lunged toward us. I braced myself for impact, knowing that the battle had only just begun. And then, as if the darkness itself had come alive, Aria’s power exploded from her, a wild force that shook the earth beneath us. The pack of rogue wolves surged forward, their eyes locked on Aria. But this time, they weren’t just coming for me—they were coming for her. The rogue wolves surround us, their eyes glowing with malicious intent. As Aria struggles to control the overwhelming power w ithin her, I realize that the fight has just become a battle for her life.
