Chapter Four

**TRACY** “What is it? You know, I’m not perfect at guessing”. “Calm down, girl." “The new boss is resuming today," Amelia announced. “Let’s go and change from this uniform to a nice dress. Maybe he’ll get to notice us”. She suggested. “No please." I shrugged. “Not after Declan” I’m trying to get over the break-up and the one-night stand with a stranger last night. “Try to forget about it, Tracy, it’s not a big deal.” “I heard he’s every woman’s dream.” “He’s also the heir to Griffin Group and his family owns a couple of businesses in this city. His parents are senior government officials”. “I’m not interested." “I’m pretty sure he’s one of those rude and pompous heirs." I rolled my eyes. The head of the cleaning department, Jake Tyler, came over. “We have a meeting at the conference hall now!” he announced and walked away. I quickly grabbed my bag and followed suit. I walked into the conference room only to find everyone gorgeously dressed and seated To see the new boss. All my colleagues had already changed from their uniforms to nice outfits. “Why is she still putting on her uniform, doesn’t she know who we’re waiting to see?” Her colleagues laughed. “Don’t worry, I bet he won’t even get to notice her, not when I’m gorgeously dressed. One of my colleagues sneered. “I turned to Amelia, it seems I’m the only one still putting on my uniform?” Amelia scoffed. “I told you to change, but you bluntly refused," she scoffed. “Never mind," I shrugged. “I sat down quietly." Memories of the early hours of this morning ran through my mind again. He looked so handsome…and perfect. His dark green eyes sparkled. I could remember vividly despite the fact that he was so mean. That was so demeaning. How did I let him humiliate me that way? A round of applause drew my attention to what was going on in the conference hall. A dark-skinned man in a beige-colored suit walked into the hall. My jaw dropped the moment I realized it was him. Why is he here? Don’t tell me he’s the new boss. Maybe there’s something wrong with my sight. I closed my eyes and opened them again, but it was still him. The man who I had a one-night stand with, and he paid me off like some slut. “This has to be a dream, somebody please wake me up,” I gasped. Oh my God! Where will I run to this time? I’m still in shock. I still can’t believe he’s my new boss. I thought about what he said to me in the early hours of today. Would he fire me? No! I can’t get fired. I have to take care of my sister. I have to calm down and think. I exhale. For a few seconds, I stared at the man sitting at the forefront. He introduced himself as Ryan Griffin. When he didn’t look in my direction, I lowered my head and covered my face with my long straight hair. I felt very uncomfortable. All I was praying for at this point was that he wouldn’t notice me. In no time, the meeting finally came to an end. I was extremely happy. I crept out of the conference hall with the thought that he hadn't noticed me. The first thing I did was to tell Amelia everything that had happened. “You’re kidding, right?” Amelia asked. “Do I look like I’m kidding here?” I asked, anxiously. She was shocked. “Then you should be happy that you slept with a hot man." Do you realize how many ladies are dying to be in his arms? Don’t say that please. I’m scared he might fire me. I have to take care of my sister and I can’t afford to be jobless at this point. Oh my gosh! I’ve really messed up, I shouldn’t have gone to that bar to drink. I shouldn’t have got myself drunk. I wish I could turn back the hands of time. I wouldn’t have had a one-night stand with a stranger that turned out to be my boss. “Girl, calm down, I think you’re literally overreacting." “Overreacting?” I responded, angrily. I hate how frustrated I am right now. Amelia patted my shoulder. “Don’t worry, maybe he didn’t get to notice you at all." Mr Jake’s voice suddenly sounded so loud: “Tracy, Mr Griffin wants you in his office now!” l Oh my God! I’m dead. ************** I knocked on the door of his office shakily. “Come in,” he said in a deep voice. I walked in slowly like I hadn’t seen him before. I was very, very anxious. I can’t believe the man I had a one-night stand with is my boss. Life is full of surprises. I know, too bad that I don’t like this surprise. I stood there calmly while he was going through his laptop like he hadn’t noticed my presence. I gulped before saying," You sent for me, Mr Griffin. He looked up to me and offered a smile. He stressed at me from head to toe with his dark cold eyes. I felt very uncomfortable, but I tried not to make it obvious. He eased back into his swivel chair and said, bluntly, “I thought my workers would be responsible. I didn’t expect to see you here even if you’re an ordinary janitor”. I felt slapped and embarrassed. Yes…I made a huge mistake last night, but that doesn’t mean he should talk to me that way. “…even if you’re an ordinary janitor”, these words sank into my mind and it pierced me so hard. The words slipped out before I could think. “With all due respect, sir, discussing our private lives isn’t professional…but if we’re going there, you’re hardly in a position to judge." Ryan’s jaw clenched, the ease on his face vanished. Damn it… I’m definitely getting fired. Oh my God! Ryan’s jaw clenched, the ease on his face vanished. Damn it… I’m definitely getting fired. Gosh …what did I get myself into? I can’t afford to be jobless right now, I have to take care of Sophia. He stared at me for seconds without uttering a word. This silence is making me more uncomfortable. I have to tender an apology even if I didn’t wrong him for the sake of my job. I cleared my throat, I… I am. He interrupted, save yourself the stress of explaining. What a small world. I can’t believe I had a thing with a common janitor in my company. I learned you didn’t take the money I dropped in bed earlier today. I just wanted to compensate for your bad skills in bed, and you rejected it. I was very embarrassed and humiliated at the same time. I wish the earth could just open and swallow me. That was so rude of you I must say. We all have different reasons for the things we do anyway. You made me feel like a w***e sir, which I’m not. “Ohhhh, I see”. I guess we just have to leave the past behind us. That night was a mistake. “It’s okay, you can go back to your duty." He frowned. I feel relieved. When I got to the janitorial closet, Amelia came over.
