Chapter 2 — Falling as Cultivation

1117 Words
On the mountain that could not be named, there was no sunrise. Light did not arrive. It simply… existed. --- Athem remained seated beneath the ancient tree. The same position. The same stillness. The same quiet presence that seemed to press gently against reality itself. The kettle rested above the flame. The tea was warm. Unchanging. --- At the edge of the mountain— Kai stood once more. His robes were torn from the previous fall. Blood had dried along his sleeve, dark against the fabric. His breathing was steady, but deeper than before. He did not look down. He did not hesitate. --- “Again.” --- Athem’s voice came from behind him. Soft. Unforced. --- Kai stepped forward. --- And fell. --- There was no resistance. No attempt to stabilize himself. No effort to slow his descent. --- He simply allowed it. --- The wind did not roar. The air did not rush. Even gravity felt… inconsistent. --- At first, his body descended normally. Then— The pressure began. --- It did not come from outside. There was no force crushing him. No visible energy. --- It came from within. --- His bones trembled. --- A faint c***k echoed through his body. --- First Forbidden Tempering — Bone. --- Kai’s skeleton began to fracture. Not from impact— But from existence itself. --- CRACK. --- A rib split. --- CRACK. --- His arm bone fractured. --- His spine trembled violently. --- Pain surged through him. Raw. Sharp. Unavoidable. --- Yet— Kai did not resist. --- His eyes remained calm. --- His breathing—controlled. --- He did not try to stop the breaking. --- He allowed it. --- Far above— Athem poured tea. --- The liquid flowed smoothly into the cup. --- The clouds beneath the mountain shifted slightly. --- Then stilled. --- --- Kai continued falling. --- Each moment stretched. Not in time— But in sensation. --- His body felt heavier. Denser. As though each fracture was not weakening him— But revealing something hidden. --- CRACK. --- Another bone gave way. --- Blood rose in his throat. --- Still— He did not move. --- He did not protect himself. --- He did not fight. --- Because this was not battle. --- This was cultivation. --- --- The ground appeared. --- A jagged stone ledge, hidden within the endless clouds. --- Kai’s body struck it. --- BOOM. --- The impact echoed across the mountain. --- Stone shattered. Fragments scattered. --- His body twisted violently. --- Bones that were already broken— Broke further. --- Then— Silence. --- --- Kai lay still. --- For a moment— Nothing moved. --- Then— His fingers twitched. --- Slowly— He pushed himself upward. --- His arm bent unnaturally. His shoulder dislocated. Blood dripped from his lips. --- But his eyes— Remained steady. --- He stood. --- --- There was no surge of power. No visible breakthrough. No aura. No sign of “progress.” --- Only— Endurance. --- Kai exhaled slowly. --- Then he looked upward. --- The peak was hidden by clouds. Unreachable by sight. --- And yet— He began to climb. --- --- Each step was heavy. --- Not because of gravity— But because his body no longer behaved normally. --- Bones misaligned. Muscles torn. Internal structure unstable. --- Still— He climbed. --- --- Above— Athem took a sip of tea. --- He did not look down. --- He did not observe directly. --- And yet— Nothing escaped him. --- --- Time passed. --- Kai reached the top. --- He stepped onto the peak once more. --- His breathing was heavier now. But controlled. --- He walked back to his position. --- Blood still stained his clothes. --- He bowed his head slightly. --- “The cycle is complete.” --- Silence. --- Then— --- “Again.” --- --- No praise. No correction. No explanation. --- Only repetition. --- Kai nodded. --- “Yes, Master.” --- --- He turned. --- Stepped forward. --- And fell again. --- --- This time— The breaking came sooner. --- CRACK. --- His bones fractured faster. --- The pain arrived earlier. --- But something had changed. --- The fractures— Were not identical. --- They followed a pattern. --- A subtle difference. --- As though his body— Remembered. --- --- High above— Athem set his cup down. --- “The body remembers,” he said. --- He was not speaking to Kai. --- And yet— The words reached him. --- --- Kai continued falling. --- This time— He noticed it. --- The breaking— Was not random. --- It was… guiding him. --- Not forcing. Not shaping. --- But revealing. --- --- CRACK. --- Another fracture. --- But this time— He understood it. --- Not intellectually. --- But physically. --- --- He adjusted. --- Not resisting. Not controlling. --- Allowing. --- --- The fall ended. --- Impact. --- BOOM. --- Stone shattered again. --- But less than before. --- --- Kai stood more quickly this time. --- Still injured. Still broken. --- But— More stable. --- --- He climbed again. --- --- At the peak— Athem poured another cup. --- The fire beneath the kettle flickered once. --- Then returned to stillness. --- --- “Master.” --- Kai stood behind him again. --- “The fractures… are different.” --- Silence. --- Athem lifted his cup. --- “They should be.” --- --- Kai paused. --- “…Is that progress?” --- --- Athem did not answer directly. --- “If you can measure it,” he said, “it is still within limits.” --- --- Kai lowered his gaze. --- “Yes, Master.” --- --- He turned once more. --- Walked to the edge. --- And stepped forward. --- --- Below— The endless clouds waited. --- The unseen ledge remained. --- The breaking would come again. --- --- Above— Athem remained unmoving. --- --- The world below climbed toward Heaven. --- Step by step. Level by level. --- Ascending. --- --- But here— On this mountain— --- Cultivation was not rising. --- It was falling. --- Again. And again. --- Until falling— --- No longer meant descent. --- --- Until breaking— --- No longer meant damage. --- --- Until the body— --- Forgot what it meant to be whole. --- --- And remembered— --- What it truly was. --- --- Athem took another sip of tea. --- The clouds shifted. --- The mountain remained silent. --- --- And Kai— --- Fell again.
