A practically hysterical Sasha noticed that the rats’ hindlegs were dead, atrophied. Their small, angry eyes seemed completely insane. They squeakedincessantly. All of a sudden, Oleg lowered the gun and fired into the middle of the knot — splitting, it seemed to Sasha, one of the rats into two halves, scattering its filthy, sloppy intestines. Sasha was about to curse at Oleg when he fired again and must have hit the centre of the tail knot. Unexpectedly freed from each other, several of the rats began to crawl away, dragging their hind legs and tails — some short and others way too long. Oleg stuck the gun in his pocket and stepped on a rat’s back and then, with a menacing swing, swiftly severed its head with his trowel. He went for another rat with the trowel, the flat side this time.
