Naomi’s POV
I didn’t sleep very well the night before. At first, I couldn’t stop thinking about what I was gonna do about the Brian and Jenna situation, but mostly I was thinking about what I was gonna do in my new situation. My dad is a Police officer, and I just agreed to become part of a criminal organisation. This is going to be awkward. I’m glad that Brian and I didn’t live together. That could’ve made this whole situation a lot worse by worrying everybody as to my whereabouts, and for that I’m thankful.
I suddenly hear a loud knock on my door. I glanced at my clock before climbing out of bed as quick as possible and throwing on the dressing gown I found in the wardrobe last night. It’s so cosy and soft and I loved it, but what I don’t love is that it is 5.15am “Come in” I shouted, and low and behold, the person who walked through the door was Elias.
He looked like he had just gotten out of the shower with his dishevelled, dark-brown, straight hair. He wore a white t-shirt, that magnificently clung to every nook and cranny of every muscle in his torso and arms. He also wore grey Adidas sweats and white trainers. I couldn’t help but think of the things I would do to this gorgeous man. He was a picture of perfection. I could just imagine myself kissing all the way down his body and back up again. Oh, the things I wish he would do to me. I shook away the thought. I think I’m officially, and completely, going insane.
“Huh hmm.” He startled me and I realised I’d been staring at him for an uncomfortable amount of time. Woops.
“This is your wake-up call. Just thought I’d make sure you were up to get ready for our training session today, since it is your first time,”
“Thanks, although I always try to get up early when I’m about to start training with a Mafia boss,” I said sarcastically. He tried to hold back his smile of amusement but failed epically.
“Are you always a ray of sarcasm in the morning?” I smiled at his retort. At least he got the joke.
“I’m always a ray of sarcasm.” What happened next was unexpected. He laughed wholeheartedly. I couldn’t help myself, I laughed with him. Then he caught himself on and realised what he was doing and said, “meet me in the gym in half an hour.” Oh dear, Mr Serious is back.
I had my shower and got dressed as quick as I didn’t know where the gym was, and it is almost 6am. I have a feeling that this man does not appreciate a lack of punctuality. I threw on some gym clothes that I found in the dresser and wardrobe. A gorgeous, royal blue crop top, a pair of navy, cropped leggings, and a pair of plain white Nike Air Maxx. I opened the door and was startled by the sight of the biggest man I’ve ever seen. He was like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnston in size but looked like Zac Efron in appearance. He was very intimidating with his extremely serious expression and size.
“I’m Alec. I will be your ‘escort’ for the near future. I’m sure Elias told you.” He said in an incredibly low and grumbly tone. I could tell he didn’t want to be here whatsoever.
“Hi, I’m Naomi, and yes he told me. could you do me a massive favour?”
He looked at me with a questioning look. Eyebrow raised and all.
“Can you show me where the gym is? Elias never told me where it is when he told me to meet him there” I said timidly.
“Ooh, calling the boss by his first name, are we?” he said with a smirk and teasing tone.
“Should I also call him boss?” I asked curiously.
“What did the boss say to call him?”
“He didn’t say, that’s why I’m asking.” I said getting annoyed at the time we were wasting with his coyness.
“Well, then I suggest you ask him when we get to the gym. The rest of us call him boss unless you’re on a personal level with him. His inner circle.”
I eyed him for a second then said “So, are you leading the way or what?”
When we got to the gym, I could see Elias working on a punching bag. If that punching bag were a person, I’d feel seriously sorry for them. He looked at me once he’d finished his rhythm with the punching bag. Oh my god. He was sweating profusely which made it able for me to see through the white t-shirt I seen him in earlier, and I’m liking what I see. Maybe a bit too much. I feel like I’m starting to sweat already, and I haven’t even started working out yet. He started walking towards us, then stopped in front of us
“You’re early,” he smiled, “I like the enthusiasm.”
“I thought you were, maybe, the type of person to appreciate punctuality,” I said confidently.
His next action surprised both me and Alec. He laughed, a wholehearted laugh.
“You’re quite funny Miss Loughran.”
“Thank you. What do I call you by the way? Alec said people who work for you usually call you boss unless they’re in your inner circle.”
“Oh, did he now?” He looked at Alec, who didn’t move a muscle, then looked back at me. “I like you Naomi, so here’s the deal. When it is just us, including Alec, you may call me Elias, but around the other employees, you will call me boss. Understood?”
“Loud and clear.”
“Okay,” he started towards the punchbag as he talked, and I followed, “I would like you to punch this bag.”
My dad had taught me how to fight, should the opportunity arise where I might need some fighting skills. At least I won’t make an absolute fool of myself I suppose. I put my hands up and got into a fight/defensive stance, focus right on the middle of the bag, then let rip, and jabbed left then right, then landed a right hook and left uppercut. I turn to Elias for confirmation that what I was doing, was what he was looking for. His brown eyes were wide, and his mouth nearly hit the floor in shock Both men seemed to be in a state of shock.
“Was that what you were asking for?” I teased.
He shook off his surprise. “Where did you learn how to fight?”
“My dad wanted me to take lessons just in case I ever got into a situation where I would need it. I try to excel at everything I do.”
“Well you certainly excelled at this.” There was still a lot of surprise in his voice.
He stood there staring into space, looking like he was thinking of what to do next.
“Fight me.” he said nonchalantly
I’m sure he seen the surprise in my face “Fight you?”
“Yes, fight me. Let us see how far those skills go.”
I don’t like this idea. I kept looking at him to see if he would burst out laughing again, like it was a punchline to a joke, but he just stood looking back at me. Waiting for my answer.
“Okay.” I said confidently.
“Confidence,” he said pleased, “good you took my advice against being timid.”
“I’m trying.”
“Good, now hit me”
He said it as if this wasn’t a big deal, like this happened all the time. Maybe it does happen all the time. I kinda forgot that this is the Mafia for a split second. He took a fighting stance, waiting for me to punch him, so I did the unexpected, and round-housed him. I could hear Alec in the corner.
“Are you getting soft Elias?” he snickered.
Elias got up to a standing position. “Why don’t you come up and try?” He challenged.
Alec gave an eery smile, “gladly.” He sounded just a bit too happy to be fighting me.
He watched me as I got into my stance and raised my hands over my face. I think this guy is too cocky for his own good. I feigned a weakness on my left side by flopping my arm down a bit. He took advantage, like I knew he would and tried to right hook me. Little did he know, that was the plan. I caught his right wrist and twisted it until I had him in an arm lock, with his arm behind his back. I dropped him to his knees, pushed him forward, then stood back with my arms up in surrender. The shock on his face was priceless. Now Elias was the one snickering in the corner.
“So, are you getting soft Alec?” he smiled smugly. Copying what his friend had said to him earlier.
Alec got up unimpressed, and wondered off, mumbling under his breath. Elias came over to me again still having a bit of a giggle to himself.
“Don’t worry about him,” he smiled, “He has always been a huge grump.”
He sounded very fond of him. They must have grown up together.
“Okay, so my plans for teaching you basic self-defence is out the window. You clearly know how to handle yourself. Do you know how to use a gun?”
“No. My self-defence classes never went past physical combat. Plus, it’s illegal to own a gun in Northern Ireland.”
“Well then, off we go to the shooting range.”
We got into his car, a gorgeous white Audi A8, and he drove me up a lane. There seemed to be a warehouse right at the end of it. I wasn’t really focused on how we got there, but I know he came out near Holywood. I don’t know how I felt about our next activity. The only type of gun I’ve felt was an airsoft gun, although from what I hear, the feel similar, only a real gun isn’t coloured with green or blue. My dad loves to play airsoft. It’s the closest he can come to shooting a real person legally he says, sarcastically of course. I giggled to myself and seen Elias turn to look at me with a questioning look in the corner of my eye.
“Sorry, I just thought of something funny.”
“Pray tell?”
“Family joke. You wouldn’t get it.”
He smiled, seeming to know exactly what I meant. I found myself wondering where his family were. Did he have any siblings? Did he have parents? Did he have any family at all? I was about to ask him, but he interrupted me by saying, “we’re here.” I looked at the warehouse in closer detail. It said B&Q on the side, but it was worn and barely visible, and it was completely covered in what look like a moss-like substance. As we walked in, I noticed an immediate change. The place was immaculate. Every booth had its own locker and assortment of weapons to use. I suddenly felt a rush of excitement as we went to a booth.
