Aria's pov
A cold substance was smeared all over my body when I woke up.
"What on earth?" I let out a scream and instantly jolted to consciousness.
"You seem to have a fairly easy life, don't you?" The maid who doused me in cold water asked, grinning at me while using her other hand to hold the bucket.
Are you insane? I jumped to my feet and let out an angry squeal.
"You can ask your parents again when you arrive in heaven." She smirked and then gave my right cheek two slaps.
I hardly saw the slap coming because it happened so quickly. I collapsed on my butts while glaring at her and crying uncontrollably.
"Aside from glaring at the people who have wronged me, what else am I capable of doing in this hellhole?"
I gave her a fierce look, my eyes blazing with rage and hot tears. Even though I could feel my wolf rising to the surface to defend, I know better than anyone else that she is so weak that we will both be thoroughly beaten.
The maid's face remained fixed as she stood erect.
"How dare you give me that glare?" I caught her hand in mid-air and threw it away, which knocked her off balance as she growled angrily and tried to slap my cheek again.
"You believe that you are superior to me?" My voice trembled as I spat.
I straightened up, and she looked scared. For the first time, I am going to stand up for myself and speak up.
“What did you say?” She asked, attempting to remain calm.
I was prepared to stop using my brain and instead let my mouth do the thinking. I took a step forward, filling the small gap.
"You think you will get away with treating me like garbage?" I asked, keeping my gaze fixed on hers and jabbing my fingernails into her chest.
The maid's lips curled upward in a sneer.
With venom in her voice, she declared, "You are nothing but a weakling and a pathetic idiot."
Angrily, I replied, "I am far better than a fool like you kissing up to your mate's butts just to be known."
She arched an eyebrow at me while clenching her fists, but I was not prepared to remain silent just yet.
She became resentful when I added, "You are nothing more than Amelia's lackey and a dog idiot."
She was about to speak when a maid suddenly appeared in the room.
She declared before departing, "Aria, you are being called to the regent's chamber immediately."
For a brief moment, I forgot about my arguments with the maid who was standing directly in front of me, roaring with rage and anger, as a smile appeared on my face.
I tried to dry myself off and walked away from her, leaving her to her thoughts and her stupidity. She was still standing, rooted to the ground, as I could see.
"That is how embarrassment feels," I thought to myself as I shook my head. I could feel her gaze piercing my body.
"Do you have anything else to say?" Uncomfortable with her in the room, I asked.
The fact that you were called to the refent's office and that he also supported you this afternoon does not make you unique in it. She muttered, loud enough for me to hear, "You are just bad luck, no wonder your parents left you to perish."
Her words gave me a rush of anger, but before I could respond, she turned and left, leaving me shaken and alone.
I forced myself to ignore what she had said, trying to keep myself as tidy and presentable as possible. After putting my long blond hair in a bun, I hurried out of the room in the direction of the regent's office.
Taking a deep breath, I knocked lightly on the wooden door, trying to hide my nervousness.
A deep baritone voice said, "Come in," from behind the closed door. When I heard the voice, my heart almost fell.
I cautiously entered the office and took in my surroundings.
This is the first time in my eighteen years here that I have ever entered the regent's chamber, which was a hallowed and forbidden space.
Standing rooted to my spot, I bowed my head.
"Aria, correct?" The gamma wolf near me asked, and I nodded my head in agreement.
Quickly approaching the regent, he whispered something in his ear. I tried to listen with my strained ear, but to no avail.
As he spoke, he returned to where I was standing, his face boned.
He said in a low voice, "You are to begin working as the regent's personal maid starting tomorrow," gesturing for me to leave right away.
With joy bouncing in my heart, I hurried out of the room. As I walked past the maids, I was unaware of the murderous glare I was receiving.
"I have finally accomplished something in my life," I exclaimed with joy, running up and down the room.
My eyes never left my new maid uniform as I lay on the bed, hoping that the day would break so I could begin my new responsibility.
I immediately hurried from my room to the regent's room to retrieve his daily schedule as soon as the bell rang.
It was completely dark in the room when I pushed the door open. My nose was hit by a potent metallic smell.
As soon as I entered the room and turned on the light switch, my heart fell to the floor.
In horror, I let out a shriek.
