By the time I made it to the bus stop, the bus had already driven off. Jackson's smug face looked at me from the back row, flipping me the middle finger before turning away from me.
I bit into the muffin. Oatmeal cranberry raisin. I fought the urge to gag as I took another bite and started on the 6-mile walk to the school.
The quickest path to school led me through main street, which I was not looking forward to. But I was on my last 2 months of school and could not afford to be any later than I already was going to be.
I kept my head down, looks of disgust and horror at my very existence plastered across the pedestrians' faces as they go about their errands. Mostly housewives with nothing else to do with their days except shop and gossip.
When nothing is more important than having children, being unable to do just that is seen as an affront to the Gods.
Though I suspected no one asked the Gods themselves what they thought.
My train of thought was interrupted as I suddenly found myself falling through the air. I hissed in pain as I landed on my hands, the skin breaking against the pebbles scattered across the sidewalk, and pain radiated from my wrists up my arms.
I turned, looking into the light blue eyes of Adriana Deadpaw, the Betas eldest daughter. At 22, she was about to graduate college.
I guess being educated doesn't make one any less of a b***h.
"Who let you out of the kennel?" Adriana sneered. She would have such a pretty face if it wasn't for her personality.
"Please, Miss Deadpaw, I'm just trying to get to school." I began to rise to my feet.
"School?" Adriana shrieked. "Didn't realize mutts needed an education." She stepped on my backpack, putting her full weight into keeping me on the ground. "You're good for little more than a doorstop. And at least doorstops can be visually pleasing."
I kept my mouth shut. Any words in retaliation would just lead to more hurt. Besides, I was finding it incredibly difficult to breath, and was trying to focus my energy into keeping my chest tense as to not be crushed.
"Adriana!" Came a low, growling male voice. I knew better than to look up, I knew whose voice that was.
"Alpha," Adriana tried to turn on the charm. "It's a pleasure to see you."
Alpha Damian growled at the young woman. "Release the mutt, Adriana."
I felt her weight slowly remove itself from my back. I still did not dare get up.
"You know just because you're the Alpha now does not mean you have to care about every piece of filth-"
"Watch your mouth, Deadpaw." Alpha Damians voice stayed calm and steady, yet dripped with authority. "Mutt," His attention turned to me. "Get off the ground."
I slowly made my way to my feet, wiping my hands on my pants, and kept my eyesight to the sidewalk. "Thank you, Alpha."
"Are you hurt?"
I shook my head, hiding my palms. "Miss Deadpaw didn't harm me."
Alpha Damian scoffed, grabbing my hands, facing my scratched up palms towards himself. "I could smell the blood. Do not lie to me again."
"Yes. I apologize, Alpha."
"Now, get to school."
I scurried away, more than happy to get away from the situation. Jackson's elder brother always made me nervous, and the farther I am from Adriana, the better.
