Chapter 14: A New World The journey to the city felt endless. As the bus carried Amina farther from her village, the familiar sound of crashing waves slowly faded into memory, replaced by the rumble of traffic, the blare of car horns, and the constant buzz of busy streets. She watched through the window as the scenery changed from sandy shores and fishing boats to highways lined with shops, tall buildings, and neighborhoods filled with people who seemed to be in a hurry. For the first time in her life, Amina realized how vast the world truly was. She rested her forehead gently against the cool glass of the bus window. Every passing mile reminded her that she was leaving behind the only home she had ever known. She missed the salty breeze of the sea, the cheerful greetings of the villagers, and the comforting sight of her parents waving goodbye. She quietly reached into her bag and held the small notebook her father had given her. It reminded her that no matter where life took her, she carried her family's love and prayers with her. After several hours, the bus entered the city center. Towering buildings reached toward the sky, colorful billboards decorated the streets, and streams of vehicles filled every road. Vendors called out to customers from busy markets, while buses, motorcycles, and cars moved in every direction. Everything seemed bigger, faster, and louder than the peaceful coastal village she had always called home. Although the unfamiliar surroundings made her nervous, they also filled her heart with excitement. She whispered a silent prayer. "Lord, help me find my place here." Soon the bus turned through the gates of the college campus. Amina's eyes widened in amazement. The campus was breathtaking. Wide walkways connected beautiful classroom buildings with bright white walls and large windows. Carefully trimmed gardens overflowed with colorful flowers, while tall trees provided cool shade for students reading books or chatting with friends. Birds sang from the branches as a gentle breeze carried the scent of fresh grass across the grounds. Students hurried from one building to another, laughing together and discussing assignments. Some wore confident smiles while others carried stacks of books under their arms. For a brief moment, Amina wondered if she truly belonged there. "What if I'm not good enough?" she thought. She took a deep breath, remembering her mother's words. "Courage isn't the absence of fear. It is trusting God even when you're afraid." Holding onto those words, she stepped forward. A staff member welcomed the new students with a warm smile and guided them through the registration process. After completing the necessary paperwork, Amina received her hostel assignment. Her room was simple but comfortable. Four neatly arranged beds stood beside the walls, each with a small cupboard and study table. Sunlight streamed through the window, making the room feel warm and inviting. As she placed her bag beside one of the beds, another girl entered. She had bright eyes, a cheerful smile, and carried herself with confidence. "You're new too?" the girl asked kindly. Amina smiled shyly. "Yes. I'm Amina." "I'm Grace," the girl replied warmly as they shook hands. "Welcome! Don't worry. The first day is always the hardest." Those simple words immediately eased the nervousness in Amina's heart. Before long, the other two roommates arrived. They introduced themselves, shared stories about where they came from, and laughed together while arranging their belongings. That evening they ate dinner together in the dining hall. The hall buzzed with conversation. Students from different regions spoke in different accents, sharing jokes, dreams, and experiences. Although Amina listened more than she spoke, she enjoyed learning about people whose lives had been so different from hers. Over the following days, she gradually settled into her new routine. Every morning began before sunrise. She made her bed, spent a few quiet moments in prayer, and prepared for class. Lectures started early and often continued throughout the day. Subjects were taught in greater depth than she had ever experienced before. Her teachers encouraged students to ask questions, participate in discussions, and think beyond memorizing facts. At first, Amina found this intimidating. Many of her classmates answered confidently and seemed well prepared. Sometimes she hesitated before raising her hand, afraid she might give the wrong answer. Still, she refused to stop trying. She spent long evenings in the library, carefully reading textbooks and making detailed notes. Whenever she encountered difficult lessons, she reminded herself that every expert had once been a beginner. Despite her determination, the transition was not easy. One afternoon the students received the results of their first mathematics test. Amina unfolded her paper and immediately felt her heart sink. The score was much lower than she had expected. Around her, some students celebrated their excellent grades while others discussed the answers excitedly. Quietly, Amina walked outside and sat beneath a large shade tree overlooking the campus gardens. She stared at the test paper in silence. Tears threatened to fill her eyes. "Maybe I don't belong here," she whispered to herself. "Maybe everyone else is smarter than I am." Just then, her mathematics teacher, Mr. Bello, happened to walk past. He noticed her troubled expression and stopped. "You look worried," he said gently. Amina handed him the test paper. "I thought winning the scholarship meant I was good enough," she admitted softly. "But now I'm beginning to doubt myself." Mr. Bello looked at the paper before smiling kindly. "A scholarship is not proof that you know everything," he said. "It is proof that someone believes you can learn." He paused before continuing. "Great students are not those who never fail. They are the ones who refuse to stop learning. Every mistake is an opportunity to improve. Don't let one test decide your future." His words settled deeply in Amina's heart. They reminded her of everything her parents and Mr. Ade had taught her. Hard work. Perseverance. Faith. Those qualities mattered far more than one disappointing result. That evening, instead of allowing discouragement to defeat her, Amina returned to her room with renewed determination. She drew up a detailed study timetable, dividing each subject into manageable sections. She planned time for revision, practice exercises, reading, and prayer. Grace noticed what she was doing. "Mind if I study with you?" she asked. "I'd love that," Amina replied with a grateful smile. From that day forward, the two friends became study partners. They spent many evenings solving mathematics problems together, testing each other's knowledge, encouraging one another whenever a lesson seemed difficult, and celebrating every small improvement. Slowly but surely, the subjects that once seemed impossible became easier to understand. Each correct answer built her confidence. Each challenge made her stronger. Weeks later, another mathematics test was returned. This time Amina smiled as she looked at her score. It wasn't perfect. But it was much better. More importantly, it proved that determination could accomplish what fear never could. That night, before going to bed, Amina opened the treasured notebook her father had given her and carefully wrote: "A new place will always test you before it welcomes you. If I keep learning, keep believing, and never give up, one day this place will feel like home." She closed the notebook with a peaceful smile. Standing beside the hostel window, she looked up at the stars shining above the city. The sea was far away now, but the lessons it had taught her remained alive within her heart. Like the tides that never stopped returning to the shore, she too would keep moving forward no matter how difficult the journey became. With every lesson learned, every challenge faced, every friendship formed, and every obstacle overcome, Amina was becoming stronger, wiser, and more confident than she had ever imagined. She was no longer simply chasing a dream. Step by step, she was becoming the woman capable of living it.
