THE DOOR OF KINDNESS

Chapter 4: The Door of Kindness The first rays of morning sunlight slipped gently through the small window of Mrs. Grace's modest home, bathing the room in a warm golden glow. Diana slowly opened her eyes and lay quietly for a moment, listening to the cheerful songs of birds outside. A peaceful smile crossed her face as she whispered a prayer of gratitude. "Thank You, Lord, for another day. Thank You for giving me strength to keep going." Life was still far from easy, but something within her had changed. She no longer allowed disappointment to control her heart. Every sunrise reminded her that hope was still alive, and every new day carried the possibility of a fresh beginning. After making her bed, Diana helped Mrs. Grace sweep the compound, fetch water, and prepare breakfast. The older woman watched her with admiration. "You have such a hardworking spirit," Mrs. Grace said with a smile. "God always blesses those who remain faithful." Diana smiled softly. "I just want to become someone who can also help others one day, just as you've helped me." Mrs. Grace gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "Your season is coming, my child. Never lose hope. The right door will open at the right time." Those words stayed in Diana's heart as she picked up her folder of application letters and stepped into the busy streets. The city was already alive with activity. Buses honked impatiently, traders displayed their goods, and office workers hurried toward their destinations. Diana walked from one company to another, politely asking if there were any vacancies. Most employers shook their heads, while others promised to call if an opportunity became available. Though rejection had become familiar, she refused to give up. As she reached a crowded intersection, a familiar voice called out from behind her. "Young lady! Please wait!" Diana turned around and saw an elderly man waving excitedly. For a brief moment she searched her memory before recognition brightened her face. "Mr. Adewale!" The old man smiled warmly as he approached. "I've been hoping our paths would cross again," he said. "I've never forgotten what you did for me." Diana smiled modestly. "It was nothing, sir." Mr. Adewale shook his head. "No, my dear. It was everything." His eyes became thoughtful as he remembered the day he had collapsed in the crowded marketplace. While many people had walked past without stopping, Diana had rushed to help him, found water, called for assistance, and stayed beside him until he recovered. "Many people saw an old man in trouble," he said quietly. "You saw a human being who needed compassion. That kind of character cannot be taught." Diana lowered her eyes, humbled by his words. "I only treated you the way I would want someone to treat my own father." Mr. Adewale smiled. "That is exactly why I have been looking for you." He paused before asking, "Tell me, have you found a job yet?" A shadow crossed Diana's face. "No, sir. I've attended several interviews, but nothing has worked out." The elderly man nodded thoughtfully. "Perhaps today will be different." He reached into his pocket, removed a small notebook, and carefully wrote an address. "I have a close friend named Mr. Samuel. He owns a respected company and recently mentioned that he needs an office assistant. He's searching for someone trustworthy more than someone with years of experience." He handed Diana the paper. "I believe you're the person he's looking for." Diana accepted it with trembling hands. "I don't know how to thank you." "You already have," Mr. Adewale replied with a smile. "Kindness has a way of returning when we least expect it." Filled with hope, Diana thanked him sincerely and hurried toward the address. The company occupied a beautiful office building that overlooked one of the city's busiest streets. The polished glass entrance reflected the morning sunlight, making the building appear even more impressive. For a moment Diana stood outside, taking a deep breath. "This could change my life," she whispered. Gathering her courage, she stepped inside. The receptionist welcomed her kindly before leading her to the manager's office. Behind a neatly arranged wooden desk sat Mr. Samuel, a distinguished middle-aged man whose calm expression immediately put Diana at ease. He stood and greeted her warmly. "So, you're the young woman Mr. Adewale speaks so highly of." "Yes, sir," Diana replied respectfully. "He has told me about your kindness." Mr. Samuel invited her to sit. "Tell me about yourself." Instead of trying to impress him with exaggerated stories, Diana spoke honestly. She shared her educational background, the difficulties she had experienced since arriving in the city, and her determination to build a better future through hard work. She admitted that she lacked professional experience but assured him that she was eager to learn. Mr. Samuel listened carefully without interrupting. When she finished, silence filled the room for several moments. Finally, a warm smile appeared on his face. "I've interviewed many people," he said, "but very few speak with such honesty." He folded his hands. "Skills can be taught. Experience comes with time. But integrity, humility, and compassion are qualities that cannot be bought or trained." Diana held her breath. "I would be honored to have you join this company as my office assistant." For several seconds she could hardly believe what she had heard. Tears filled her eyes. "Thank you, sir," she whispered. "I promise I won't disappoint you." Mr. Samuel smiled kindly. "I believe you. Report here on Monday morning." As Diana walked out of the office, joy overflowed in her heart. She looked up toward the clear blue sky. "Thank You, Lord," she whispered. "You truly make everything beautiful in Your own time." She almost ran all the way back to Mrs. Grace's house. The older woman was preparing lunch when Diana burst through the doorway with excitement shining in her eyes. "I got the job!" Mrs. Grace immediately embraced her. "I knew it," she said joyfully. "God never forgets His children." Together they knelt in prayer, thanking God for His faithfulness through every difficult season. When Monday finally arrived, Diana reported to work before anyone else. She carefully learned every responsibility assigned to her. Whether organizing files, answering telephone calls, welcoming visitors, preparing documents, or assisting different departments, she performed every task with excellence. She treated everyone with respect, greeted each coworker warmly, and remained willing to learn. Her positive attitude quickly became noticeable throughout the office. After only a week, Mr. Samuel called her into his office. "You've done excellent work," he said. "Your dedication and willingness to learn are admirable." Diana smiled gratefully. "Thank you, sir. I'm simply grateful for this opportunity." Her humility earned the admiration of many employees. But while some celebrated her success, one person watched with growing resentment. Vanessa had worked at the company for several years. She believed she deserved every promotion and every compliment. Seeing a newcomer receive praise stirred jealousy deep within her heart. One afternoon, she watched silently as Mr. Samuel commended Diana for completing an important assignment ahead of schedule. The applause from several coworkers only fueled Vanessa's bitterness. Later, she approached Diana with a smile that failed to hide her envy. "It seems you've become the manager's favorite." Diana looked genuinely surprised. "No," she replied gently. "I'm simply trying to do my work well." Vanessa's expression hardened. "We'll see how long everyone keeps praising you." Without another word, she walked away. Diana watched her leave, sensing that something had changed. Mrs. Grace's words echoed in her heart: "Never allow another person's bitterness to steal your peace." From that day forward, Diana noticed Vanessa observing her closely. Minor mistakes that others ignored suddenly became reasons for criticism whenever Diana was involved. Still, Diana refused to respond with anger or revenge. She believed that honesty, patience, and kindness would speak louder than arguments ever could. As she left the office one evening, the setting sun painted the sky with brilliant shades of orange and gold. Only weeks earlier she had wandered these same streets wondering whether hope still existed. Now she had meaningful work, people who believed in her, and a future worth fighting for. Yet deep within her heart, she sensed that every blessing would bring new challenges. Looking toward the evening sky, she whispered another quiet prayer. "Lord, thank You for opening this door. Give me wisdom to walk through it with humility, courage to face every challenge, and strength to remain faithful no matter what lies ahead." With renewed determination, Diana continued down the quiet street, unaware that the greatest test of her character had only just begun.
