The twinkle in McNulty’s eye clued Frank that perhaps he wasn’t as much the small-town cleric as he was enjoying playing the role of one. Frank asked directions to the Sheriff’s station and they chatted a bit further before shaking hands and bidding one another goodbye. * * * * The Freeman County Sheriff’s Department was a long, low building with a decent-sized parking lot. Double glass doors led into the station. A uniformed receptionist watched him approach as she sat at a gap in a glass wall at a high counter. Before he was halfway to her, she said, “Can I help you?” Frank decided it wouldn’t hurt to display his ID and badge and had it out at the ready.
