Chapter 7: Unforeseen Encounters

682 Words
The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. The cafeteria slowly emptied, the noise fading into distant murmurs as students packed up and spilled out into the hallways. But my mind was still reeling. The phone call. Sienna’s gaze. What was happening to me? I had a strange, sinking feeling that I was standing on the edge of something I didn’t fully understand — but I could feel it coming. The truth was close, just out of reach, and it was starting to gnaw at me. I pushed through the crowded halls, eyes trained ahead, trying to shake the feeling that someone was always watching. I didn’t know what I was looking for. Maybe I wasn’t even looking at all. Maybe it was just the pull of my own thoughts, swirling together and growing heavier with every step. I rounded the corner, heading for my next class, when I nearly collided with someone. “s**t—” I muttered, stepping back. “Sorry about that.” I looked up, recognizing the voice immediately. It was Jade. She was a blast from the past — someone I hadn’t seen in months. Jade was always around back when Emma and I had been… well, before everything fell apart. She was Emma’s friend. She used to hang around with us, always with her sharp tongue and no-filter humor. But something was off. Her eyes weren’t as warm as I remembered. "Hey, Adrian," she said, a little too stiff. "Long time." I nodded, trying to keep the conversation casual. "Yeah, it’s been a while." The tension in the air was palpable. Jade’s gaze flickered behind me, almost like she was looking for someone. Her lips pressed together for a moment, as if she were calculating something. "So, how’s everything?" she asked, her voice too light, too neutral. I shrugged, trying to ignore the discomfort crawling under my skin. "Same old. How about you?" Jade seemed to hesitate, and I could’ve sworn there was something in her eyes. A flicker of recognition. But it wasn’t warm, it wasn’t friendly. It was something… else. "Everything’s fine," she said, her tone flat. "I heard you’re hanging out with the new girl." My stomach tightened. Sienna. It felt like Jade was probing, trying to catch me in something she already knew. I swallowed hard, unsure how to respond. "Yeah, I guess. We’re friends." "Friends," Jade repeated, a little too casually. "Sure." She glanced over my shoulder again, like she was seeing something that wasn’t there. "Listen, Adrian," Jade said quietly, her tone shifting. "Just… be careful, okay? Some people don’t always have the best intentions." The words struck me like a punch to the gut. I stared at her, searching for some clue in her face, but she quickly wiped it away, her expression turning cold again. "What’s that supposed to mean?" I demanded, my patience thinning. Jade didn’t answer right away. Instead, she shifted her weight, glanced down the hall once more, and then back at me. She opened her mouth to speak, but then closed it, biting back whatever she was about to say. Before I could push her, she took a step back. "Just… take care, Adrian," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. And before I could even process what had just happened, she was gone. I stood there for a long moment, the words echoing in my mind. "Some people don’t always have the best intentions." What the hell did that mean? The bell rang, snapping me out of my daze, and I hurried to my next class. But as I walked, Jade’s warning clung to me, sticking like glue. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was missing something — something important. Something tied to Sienna. To that damn phone call. To Jade’s cryptic warning. Something in my gut told me this wasn’t just about her being new at school. No, it was deeper than that. And the more I tried to ignore it, the more the pieces started to fit together — but I wasn’t ready for what the picture looked like.
