IT WAS LATE, AND A clock ticked on the bookshelf in Garnett’s study. It was too cramped in here to breathe. And it was too lonely in here to feel anything but alone. Garnett and Brendan had been upstairs for hours, leaving her here to sit and think. She hated thinking. Her brain had shut down about thirty minutes ago. People who could turn into animals. Animals who could talk. Death walking on four legs. It was all too much to think about. She couldn’t leave. She had decided that much. There was something amazing going on here. Amazing? Terrifying. Frightening beyond all reason. She needed to understand it. If she left, she would never get the chance to have her questions answered. For the rest of her life she would have to wonder which of the people she passed on the street were going
