CHAPTER 4

1070 Words
Seeing that things were turning in her favor, Hailey's eyes became teary as she cried, "Aria, I never thought you could do this. Saying such lies against me because you think James and I are having an affair." "What! You think that my upright son would cheat on you, and much less with Hailey, the daughter of an Omega!" Meredith said with disgust written all over her face. "Meredith is right; there is no way the soon-to-be Alpha would get involved with the daughter of a lowly Omega." Liam said with a smile. Nobody was surprised that he called Meredith by her name because on the first day he stepped his foot in the Grey Pack, he made it clear that he only had one mother, even though she was dead. Hailey felt so insulted that she looked at James with pleading eyes, hoping he would fight for her. "Are you really having an affair with Hailey?" Derek said. What was supposed to be a peaceful family dinner quickly turned into an interrogation session. James cleared his throat and held Ava's hand that was on the table, saying, "For Ava to even think I'm cheating on her is enough to break my heart. Maybe it's because I've been working late, and that's why she thinks Hailey and I have something." Meredith let out a sigh of relief and glared at Ava. "Even though he was having an affair with another woman, will you not really feel ashamed to say it in public? What exactly have you given my son in this relationship? To be honest, you are actually no different from Hailey because you may be an Alpha's daughter, but everyone knows that your father is worthless. It is due to your marriage with my son that the Yellowstone pack even has the courage to come out in society, and yet, after all the love my son has shown to you, you can even do something so simple as giving him a son. How wicked can you be? He has stayed with me for five years, but yet nothing to show for it. I wondered if perhaps you manipulated things so that you could become my son's mate!" "Meredith!" Derek shouted. "What nonsense are you saying? How could she have manipulated things to make James a mate? Think before you speak." Even though Ava felt hurt by Meredith's words, she was already used to it. To her, dinner at the Haines mansion was a night of constant reminders of her barrenness. She had felt so hurt by James's betrayal that she didn't for once think that she was the one who had pushed him into Hailey's arms. If she wasn't infertile, then maybe James and she would still be living a happy life, and now she has ruined everything by sleeping with her husband's brother. Meredith was right; James got nothing from this marriage, but she gave him all the love she had in her heart. She deserves to be betrayed, and James doesn't deserve to die childless because he was stuck with her. Making a decision in her heart, Ava looked at James, who had a smug look on his face. "Let's get a divorce." She said, shocking everyone at the table apart from Liam, who chuckled. "Ava!" Derek called out loudly, "Do you not have a single respect for me?" "I do, Father, but Mother is right; I have never given anything to James since we got married, so I think it's best that I free him from this cage." Ava said, not taking her eyes off James. "That's enough! Let's eat; after dinner, we will discuss this." Derek said with finality in his voice. Meredith looked at the maid who was standing a few feet from them and said, "Serve the food." "Wait!" Ava said. She looked at Hailey and said, "Hailey isn't a part of our family, and as such, she shouldn't be here." Meredith rolled her eyes and was able to defend Hailey when Derek spoke. "Then Hailey will leave." "But I....." "Isn't Ava your friend? If leaving will give her some peace of mind, why are you hesitating? It's not like she said anything wrong. You are not a member of this family; you are just James's secretary, and if the daughter-in-law of this family does not want you here, then it's better you leave." Liam nodded and said, "I agree with Dad. Ava is this family's daughter-in-law, and since she doesn't feel comfortable with Hailey around, then she should leave. Don't you think so as well, James?" James clenched his fist tightly and said, "You are right; Hailey should leave." His gaze moved to Hailey, and he said, "I will see you in the office tomorrow." In all her years of living, never had she felt so humiliated. With all eyes on her, Hailey stood up and slowly walked out of the Haines fashion in deep shame. Derek looked at his daughter-in-law and asked, "Are you happy now?" Ava smiled and replied, "Thank you, Father." Dinner was served, and Derek moved to business talks. As the Alpha of one of the largest packs in the world, he was responsible for the welfare of so many people. Although he stays in a mansion with his wife, his Beta still keeps him updated on everything that happens in the pack house. James was his successor, his legitimate son, but Derek also believes that a man who can't take care of his home will definitely not be able to lead others. When eating, Ava's gaze moved to Liam, who was eating without a care in the world. He barely even looked at her; it was as if he wasn't the same man who had looked at her with so much desire last night. Liam's gaze locked on Ava, and when she quickly looked away from him, he let out a soft smile. After discovering that the woman he had slept with was his brother's wife, Liam had every intention of staying away from her. But when his father called, insisting he come to the family dinner that night, he had agreed, and that was because he wanted to see her again. The moment she walked into the room, he knew he was in trouble. Desire hit him hard, leaving him confused and unsettled. How could he be so obsessed with a woman who wasn’t his mate?
