CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX Winter came home from work on Wednesday night and picked up Sukie from her sitter. Sukie was fussy, her color up, and Winter frowned, feeling her daughter’s forehead and finding it hot. “Not getting sick, my love?” The rest of the evening she cradled her daughter in her arms, dabbing at her forehead with a cool cloth and Sukie seemed to settle down. Finally laying her down to sleep in her crib, Winter realized her body was tensed up and tried to relax. The truth was, she still felt like an amateur when it came to motherhood, and despite Cosima’s help, sometimes Winter wondered if she had done the right thing by keeping Sukie.
