Lyra's breath hung in the chilly air as she stood at the edge of the Old Docks, uncertainty gnawing at her. The shadows loomed around her, deepening the silence that enveloped the deserted area. Just moments ago, she had been a mere observer in her own life, but now she was on the precipice of something dangerous and unknown. "Lyra," he said, his voice smooth yet commanding. She hesitated, taking in his features, trying to place him. "Who is there?" The question came out sharper than she intended. "it's Kael ," he replied, stepping closer, the shadows dancing around him. "Are you okay?",you seem distorted. Everything will will be alright Lyra,I promise and I don't go back on my word. Lyra swallowed hard. "How do you know that?" He took another step closer, his expression softening. "Because I've been where you are. My memories were taken from me too, altered in ways I couldn't understand." There was a weight in his words, a shared pain that resonated with her. "I can help you uncover what's been done." A part of her wanted to run, to escape the darkness closing in around her and shun everyone out. But another part—the part that craved answers—kept her rooted to the spot. "How do you intend to help me?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. I feel like I am going crazy like nothing is real, she added. "I will protect you till my last breath, all I need in return is your trust" Trust was a dangerous commodity, especially when she couldn't even trust her own memories. But the promise of answers hung tantalizingly close. "Okay," she said, her voice steadier than she felt. "I'll trust you." She wanted to believe him. The sincerity in his eyes stirred something deep within her—a flicker of hope amidst the confusion. "And if we uncover something I'm not ready to face?" His gaze softened. "We'll deal with it together. Whatever the truth is, it's your story. You deserve to know who you really are." Lyra nodded, determination settling in her gut. "Let's find out what's really going on", Kael smiled slightly, a flicker of approval in his gaze. "Then let's get to work." As they delved into the depths of her memories, Lyra felt the tension of the unknown enveloping them. This was only the beginning, but with Kael by her side, she felt ready to confront whatever lay ahead. Lyra settled into the chair across from Kael, her mind racing with a mix of fear and anticipation. The cluttered desk was a stark contrast to the chaos in her mind; papers filled with names and diagrams lay scattered like remnants of a battle fought long ago. She could sense the weight of Kael's knowledge, the burden of his experiences. "First," he said, tapping a few keys on the computer, "I need you to recount everything you remember—no matter how small. Even fragments can help us piece things together." She took a deep breath, trying to gather her thoughts. "I've been having these dreams... nightmares, really. I'm running through dark streets, chased by shadows. I can never see who or what is behind me, but it feels like they know me." Kael nodded, his expression serious. "That could be a manifestation of your subconscious trying to tell you something. It's common for altered memories to leave a residue, a sense of loss or urgency." Lyra shivered at his words. "I thought I was going crazy. My mother asks about memories I don't have, and every time I try to recall them, it's like staring at a fogged window." "That's not uncommon either," Kael said, scribbling notes. "Memory traders often leave gaps or implant false narratives to keep their subjects compliant. The more you dig, the more clarity you'll gain and the more you try to figure it out, the more crazy it gets" She looked at him, searching for reassurance. "What if I don't like what I find?" Kael paused, his gaze steady. "Truth can be painful, but it's the only way to reclaim your life. And you won't be alone in this. I promise." Lyra took another breath, feeling the heat of determination replace her trepidation. "Okay, let's keep going." Kael switched to a series of files on his computer, showing her a map dotted with various locations. "These are known hotspots for memory traders—places where people have reported unusual experiences or missing memories. We'll start there." As he pointed to a location on the map, her heart raced. It was near an abandoned building she had seen on the outskirts of the city, a place that had always drawn her curiosity. "I've been there before," she murmured, a shiver creeping down her spine. "I thought it was just an old ruin." "It could be more than that," Kael said, his tone serious. "If your memories are tied to that place, we need to investigate it." A knot formed in her stomach. "What if we find something dangerous?" Kael leaned forward, his eyes intense. "We will be cautious. I know how to navigate these situations. The important thing is to remain vigilant. We can't afford to be caught off guard." With a nod, Lyra steeled herself. The thought of uncovering her past thrilled and terrified her. Kael's presence felt like a shield, a buffer against the unknown dangers that lay ahead. "Let's plan a visit," she said, with determination lacing her voice. "We can go tonight." Kael's expression softened, but a flicker of concern crossed his features. "Are you sure? It's risky, especially if the traders are involved." "I need to know,we don't have a choice," she insisted. "I can't keep living in this fog. I have to uncover the truth, no matter what." "Then let's prepare," he said, his voice firm yet supportive. "We'll gather what we need and leave under the cover of darkness, so that we'll be able to blend in" As they organized their supplies, a sense of urgency filled the room. Lyra's heart raced with each item they packed—flashlights, a small first aid kit, and a few tools Kael insisted were essential. Just as they finished, a noise echoed from outside, a faint rustle that sentence a jolt of adrenaline through Lyra. Kael's demeanor shifted instantly, his focus sharpening. He moved to the window, peering out into the shadows. "What is it?" she whispered, her pulse quickening. Kael held up a finger to his lips, signaling her to stay quiet. He glanced back at her, tension radiating from him. "I don't know. But we need to be ready for anything".Lyra's heart pounded in her chest, the weight of the unknown settling heavily on her. She had taken a leap into a world filled with secrets, and now there was no turning back. The truth awaited her, lurking in the shadows, and she was determined to find it—no matter the cost.
