[Wura doing laundry and humming Rihanna’s song]
“Shine bright like a diamond… mmm, shine bright like a diamond…”
[Doyin greets her]
“Good morning…”
I dropped the laundry I was washing and raised my head to see who was greeting me. To my greatest surprise, it was that handsome, tall, dark-skinned guy with the cat eyes. I was carried away with his look and his voice. He greeted me again, noticing I was out of it.
“Ohhh, sorry… good morning. Hmmm, how may I help you?”
“Please, I’m asking for Morounfayo. She’s a 400-level Medicine and Surgery student.”
“Ohhh, so sorry, Mr… please, what’s your name? So I can help ask around. If luckily I meet her and she asks who’s looking for her, I can just tell her your name. That would be easier.”
“So sorry, my name is Doyinmola Fasakin.”
“Oh, nice name. Give me a minute.”
I went inside and began asking if anyone knew who Morounfayo was. But as I walked, I kept thinking about Doyinmola. Never in my dream would I imagine that he would walk up to me himself, not to talk of speaking to me. Omo, girl, this is good ooo. I don fall for this guy, but you know as a hard girl, I can’t let it show. I need composure and small steeze.
As I was going, I met Ope on the way.
“How far, Ope, where you dey come from now? You like to just dey waka waka up and down, you no dey tire?”
“Abeg ooo, Wura, leave me alone. Is my waka waka your own waka waka? Abeg, leave me jare. So where you sef dey go now?”
I just smiled. When Ope asked, I held her hand and begged her to follow me to search for Morounfayo, the 400-level Medicine and Surgery student. She was surprised, because we both are freshers, so how come? I promised to gist her if she agreed to follow me. She had no choice, so I began telling her how Doyin came to greet me and asked me to help him call Morounfayo.
What did I say that for?
Opeyemi was so angry.
“So that’s why you left your own work and started searching for Morounfayo? Omo God, which kind babe be this? Toriloun, when will you come back to yourself? This is not you ooo. I’m tired of this stupidity sef.”
“Ahhh Ope, calm down now, it’s not up to that. Besides, I like the guy, but I just wanted to help out.”
Then Ope said, “I’m just coming from Morounfayo’s villa ooo. Let me sha help you.”
When we got there, I was in awe. Tell me why this Morounfayo is so beautiful and endowed. I was like, wait ooo, this person and Doyinmola look alike ooo.
“Hi, good morning. Someone asked me to call you outside. His name is Doyinmola Fasakin.”
As I said this, her reaction was somehow funny.
“Ohhh, Doyinmola? This is too early ooo. This boy will not let me have peace of mind. That’s why I told Dad to let him go to another school. Ahhh, I no like all this disturbance ooo. Kilode now?”
…....
“Sorry for keeping you waiting, she’s coming.”
I packed my clothes, and just as I was about to leave, something unbelievable happened.
He asked for my contact.
I was so happy, but I couldn’t show it. I kind of resisted, but he begged, saying he just wanted to show appreciation, and you know, we could talk and all of that. So I gave him my number.
And that was it… a little heart started beating faster than usual.
And just like that, the laundry, the song, and the small campus morning has shifted. I walked back to the basin humming under my breath not because I needed courage anymore, but because something small and dangerously hopeful had started. A number saved in a stranger’s phone, and a heart that had opened its gate just a little..
