Atissa’s old room reminded her of the life she no longer had. Even though it was pleasant to sleep in her own bed and experience the safety of familiar walls, she found little comfort in staying in her father’s quarters. This was a place for an archmage, or at least a promising arcanist, and she was neither. At the same time, she had nowhere else to go. She browsed through her belongings more to pass time than to decide what to do with them, as she still had to choose what kind of future she wanted for herself. Kamira’s invitation seemed honest, but no matter what thoughts Atissa had recently had about her own father, it didn’t change the fact that Kamira had killed him. Even if revenge wasn’t Atissa’s goal anymore, Kamira’s presence—and her position of power—stirred many uneasy feelings.
