The Informant

The rain had been falling for three days. Adrian stood at the window of the Sunset Bar, watching the water streak down the glass. The city was a blur of gray and shadow, its streets flooded, its people huddled inside. It was the kind of weather that made you want to stay inside, to hide from the world. But Adrian couldn't hide. He couldn't rest. His father was still out there, still hiding, still plotting. And every day that passed was another day his father could strike. The door opened. James limped in, his face pale with exhaustion. "Adrian," he said. "We've got someone. He says he knows where your father is." Adrian turned. "Who?" James shook his head. "He wouldn't give his name. He said he'd only talk to you. He's waiting in the back room." Adrian nodded. "Let's see what he has to say." --- The man was sitting at the table in the back room, his hands folded in front of him. He was old, with gray hair and a weathered face. His clothes were worn, his eyes tired. He looked like a man who'd been running for a long time. "Mr. Cross," the man said. "Thank you for seeing me." Adrian sat down across from him. "Who are you?" The man smiled. It was a sad smile, full of regret and longing. "My name is Arthur Vance," he said. "I used to be a member of the Eight." Adrian felt his blood run cold. "You're one of them." "Was." Vance's voice was flat. "I left years ago. I couldn't stand what they were doing. The corruption. The violence. The destruction." Adrian studied him. "Why are you here?" Vance met his gaze. "Because I know where your father is. And I want to help you destroy him." Adrian leaned forward. "Tell me." Vance nodded slowly. "Your father has been hiding in a compound in the mountains. A fortress, really. He's been there for years, planning, preparing. He has guards, weapons, supplies. He's ready for a siege." Adrian felt a surge of hope. "How do you know this?" "Because I helped build it." Vance's voice was bitter. "I was his architect. His engineer. I designed the compound to be impenetrable. But I also designed it to be vulnerable. If you know where to look." Adrian studied him. "Why are you betraying him? He was your ally." Vance shook his head. "He was never my ally. He was my master. He controlled everything I did, everyone I loved. He destroyed my family. He destroyed my life. And I've been waiting for years for someone to help me destroy him." Adrian felt the weight of his words. Another victim of his father's cruelty. Another life destroyed by the Eight's hunger for power. "Tell me everything," Adrian said. "Every detail. Every vulnerability. I need to know everything." Vance nodded. And he began to talk. --- The compound was a fortress. Vance described it in meticulous detail—the layout, the defenses, the guards. It was a massive structure, built into the side of a mountain. It had walls, towers, underground tunnels. It was designed to withstand a siege. But it also had weaknesses. Vance had designed them in, hidden them from his father. Secret passages. Blind spots. Vulnerabilities that only he knew about. Adrian listened, his mind racing. The compound was a challenge, but it wasn't impossible. With the right plan, the right people, the right resources, they could breach it. "How many guards?" Adrian asked. "At least thirty," Vance said. "Maybe more. He's been recruiting for years. He has loyalists, mercenaries, former military. They're all well-trained and well-armed." Adrian nodded. "We'll need more men. More firepower." Vance nodded. "I can help with that. I know people. People who want to see him fall." Adrian studied him. "Why should I trust you? You were one of them." Vance met his gaze. "Because I've lost everything. Just like you. And I want to see him burn." Adrian felt the weight of his words. He'd heard that before. From Selena. From Wren. From everyone who'd been destroyed by his father's cruelty. He made a decision. "All right," Adrian said. "You're in. But if you betray me—" Vance shook his head. "I won't. I've been waiting for this chance for years. I won't waste it." Adrian nodded. "Then let's get to work." --- The planning took hours. Adrian gathered his allies in the back room—James, Selena, Sophia on the video call, and now Vance. They went over every detail of the compound. The walls. The towers. The guards. The tunnels. "We'll hit them at night," Adrian said. "When they least expect it. We go in fast and hard, and we don't stop until it's done." James nodded. "I'll lead the assault team. We'll breach the walls and secure the perimeter." Selena spoke up. "I'll handle the infiltration. Vance knows the secret passages. He can get me inside." Adrian looked at her. "Are you sure?" Selena met his gaze. "I'm sure. I want to see this through." Adrian nodded. "Then we go tomorrow night. We rest for a day, then we move out." The meeting broke up. Adrian was alone with Vance. "One more thing," Vance said. "Your father has a failsafe. A dead man's switch. If he dies, or if the compound is breached, he'll activate it. It will destroy everything. The compound, the evidence, everything." Adrian felt his blood run cold. "How do we stop it?" Vance shook his head. "We can't. But we can be faster. We can reach him before he activates it." Adrian nodded slowly. "Then we'll be faster. We'll be faster than him." Vance studied him. "You really believe you can do this, don't you? You really believe you can destroy him." Adrian met his gaze. "I have to. Too many people are counting on me." Vance nodded slowly. "Then I'll help you. I'll help you destroy him." Adrian smiled. It was a cold smile, full of determination and rage. "Thank you," he said. --- The next day was a blur of preparation. Adrian gathered his men, briefed them on the plan, distributed weapons and supplies. The compound was a fortress, but they had the element of surprise. They had the secret passages. They had the will to win. As night fell, Adrian stood at the window of the Sunset Bar, looking out at the city. The rain had stopped, leaving behind a world of wet streets and reflected lights. "Adrian," James said, limping up beside him. "It's time." Adrian nodded. "I know." He turned away from the window and walked to the door. His men were waiting for him. His allies were waiting for him. The final confrontation was about to begin. "I'm coming, Father," he whispered. "I'm coming to destroy you."
