The morning sun rose over the Harbor, painting the sky in shades of orange and gold.
Adrian stood at the window of the Sunset Bar, watching the city wake up. The streets were quiet, the shops just opening, the people beginning their daily routines. It was a peaceful scene, a stark contrast to the chaos that had consumed his life.
His mother was sitting at the table behind him, wrapped in a blanket, sipping a cup of tea. She looked fragile, broken, but there was a light in her eyes that hadn't been there before. A spark of hope.
"Adrian," she said. "Come sit with me."
He turned and walked to the table. He sat down across from her, his eyes searching her face.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
She nodded slowly. "I will be. Thanks to you."
Adrian shook his head. "I should have found you sooner. I should have—"
"Don't." She reached out and took his hand. "Don't blame yourself. You did everything you could. You saved me."
Adrian looked at her. "He's still out there. My father. He's still hiding. Still planning."
She nodded. "I know. And I know you'll find him. You'll destroy him. You're stronger than he is."
Adrian felt a surge of emotion. "How do you know?"
She smiled. "Because I know you. I've been watching you your whole life. And I've never been more proud of anyone."
Adrian felt tears prick at his eyes. He blinked them back.
"I love you, Mother," he said.
She squeezed his hand. "I love you too, son."
---
The meeting was called for midday.
Adrian stood at the head of the table, looking at the faces of his allies. James was there, pale but determined. Selena was there, her eyes sharp and watchful. Sophia was on the video call, her image flickering on a screen. Vance was there, his face unreadable. And his mother was there, sitting quietly at the end of the table.
"We have a problem," Adrian said. "My father is still out there. He's still hiding. Still planning. And he's going to come for us."
Selena leaned forward. "Do you have any idea where he might be?"
Adrian shook his head. "No. But I know someone who might."
He looked at his mother. "Do you know where he would go?"
She nodded slowly. "He has a safe house on the coast. An old lighthouse. He's been hiding there for years."
Adrian felt a surge of hope. "Where is it?"
She pulled out a map and spread it on the table. She pointed to a location on the coast, far from the city.
"It's here," she said. "Isolated. Defensible. He'll have guards, probably a dozen or more. But it's the only place he'd go."
Adrian studied the map. "Then we go there. We hit him fast and hard. We end this."
James shook his head. "That's dangerous. We don't know what we're walking into."
Adrian met his gaze. "I know. But we don't have a choice. He's going to come for us eventually. Better to strike first."
Selena nodded. "I agree. We need to be proactive. We need to end this."
Sophia's voice came through the speaker. "I can help. I've been tracking his financial transactions. He's been moving money to a shell company on the coast. It matches the location."
Adrian nodded. "Then it's settled. We go to the coast. We find my father. We end this."
---
The planning took hours.
Adrian and his allies went over every detail. The location of the lighthouse. The number of guards. The layout of the building. The best approach. The escape routes.
"We hit them at night," Adrian said. "When they least expect it. We go in fast and hard, and we don't stop until it's done."
James nodded. "I'll lead the assault team. We'll clear the perimeter and secure the building."
Selena spoke up. "I'll handle the infiltration. I've done this before."
Adrian looked at her. "Are you sure?"
Selena met his gaze. "I'm sure. I want to see this through."
Adrian nodded. "Then we go tonight. We rest for a few hours, then we move out."
The meeting broke up. Adrian was alone with his mother.
"Are you sure about this?" she asked. "Are you sure you want to go through with this?"
Adrian met her gaze. "I'm sure. I have to end this. For you. For Dante. For everyone he's destroyed."
She nodded slowly. "Then I'll be here when you come back."
Adrian smiled. "I'll come back. I promise."
---
The convoy left at dusk.
Adrian sat in the lead vehicle, staring out the window as the city fell away behind them. The buildings grew smaller, the roads narrower, the sky wider. They were leaving the world they knew behind.
James sat beside him, his face pale with exhaustion. "Are you ready for this?" he asked.
Adrian nodded. "I've been ready my whole life."
James studied him. "You know this might not end well. He's dangerous. He's been planning for years."
Adrian met his gaze. "I know. But I have to try. I have to end this."
James nodded slowly. "Then I'm with you. Until the end."
Adrian felt a surge of gratitude. "Thank you. For everything."
James smiled. "That's what brothers are for."
---
The coast was cold and dark.
Adrian stood at the base of the cliff, looking up at the lighthouse. It was a massive stone structure, perched on the edge of the water. Lights flickered in the windows. Guards patrolled the perimeter.
"This is it," his mother said, standing beside him. "This is where he's been hiding."
Adrian nodded. "Then we go in. Fast and hard."
He signaled to his men. They spread out, surrounding the lighthouse. The attack was about to begin.
Adrian moved through the darkness, his footsteps silent on the rocks. His heart was pounding, his hands steady. He'd been waiting for this moment his whole life.
He reached the perimeter and signaled. His men opened fire.
The battle was brutal. The guards were caught off guard, scrambling for cover. Adrian's men were relentless, pushing forward through the darkness.
Adrian fought his way to the front door. He kicked it open and stepped inside.
The interior was warm, lit by a roaring fire. His father was standing at the center of the room, his hands raised.
"Adrian," his father said. "I knew you'd come."
Adrian raised his gun. "It's over, Father. You're finished."
His father smiled. "It's not over. It's never over."
He reached into his pocket. Adrian tensed, ready to fire.
But his father just pulled out a small device and pressed a button. The lighthouse shook. A massive explosion rocked the building.
Adrian was thrown to the ground. Debris rained down around him. The ceiling collapsed, blocking his view of his father.
When the dust cleared, his father was gone. Another hidden door. Another escape.
"No," Adrian shouted. "No!"
He ran to the door, but it was locked. Bolted from the other side. He slammed his fist against it, frustration and rage boiling inside him.
"He's gone," James said, limping up beside him. "We lost him."
Adrian turned away from the door. His hands were shaking. His vision was blurry.
"I was so close," he said. "I was so close."
James put a hand on his shoulder. "We'll get him. I promise."
Adrian looked at his oldest friend. "We have to. We have to end this."
---
The journey back to the city was silent.
Adrian sat in the lead vehicle, staring out the window. The coast fell away behind them, replaced by the familiar streets of the Harbor.
He'd failed again. His father was still out there. Still hiding. Still planning.
But he wasn't giving up. He couldn't give up. Too much was at stake. Too many people were counting on him.
I'll find you, Father, he thought. I'll find you, and I'll destroy you. No matter what it takes.
The sun was rising over the Harbor. A new day was beginning.
Adrian looked at the Ledger in his hands. The weight of the world in his palms.
This is not over, he thought. This is just the beginning.
