The Alliance

The Rust Yard was quiet. Adrian stood in the shadows of a rusted crane, watching the fog roll in from the Harbor. The mist was thick tonight, swallowing the world beyond twenty feet. The abandoned machinery loomed around him like the bones of dead giants. He'd been here before. With Selena. With his mother. With the ghosts of his past. *This is a trap,* a voice whispered. *You know it's a trap.* But he didn't care. He needed answers. He needed allies. And if walking into a trap was the only way to get them, he'd walk. Footsteps echoed on the concrete. Adrian's hand went to his gun, his body tensing for violence. Selena emerged from the fog. She was alone, her black coat wrapped around her like armor. Her face was pale in the dim light, her eyes sharp and watchful. "You came," she said. "I wasn't sure you would." Adrian didn't lower his hand. "You said you had information." "I do." Selena stopped ten feet away. "But first, I need to know something. Are you in or are you out?" "In or out of what?" "The war." Her voice was flat. "The war against the Eight. The war against your mother. The war that's going to tear this city apart." Adrian studied her. She was cold, controlled, calculating. But there was something beneath the surface—a fire that burned just as hot as his own. "I'm in," he said. "I've always been in." Selena nodded. Then she reached into her coat and pulled out a thick envelope. "Sophia found this," she said. "It's a list of the Eight's assets. Every bank account, every shell company, every safe house. It's not the Ledger, but it's close." Adrian took the envelope. It was heavy, filled with documents. "How did she get this?" "She's been working on it for years. Piece by piece. Transaction by transaction." Selena's voice was bitter. "She's been risking her life to expose them. And she's getting close. Too close for their comfort." Adrian tucked the envelope into his jacket. "What do you want in return?" Selena met his gaze. "I want Damien's head. And I want your mother's empire in ashes. That's all I've ever wanted." Adrian studied her. She was telling the truth—or part of it. There was something she wasn't saying. "Why do you hate Damien so much?" he asked. "I know he was your fiancé. I know you loved him once. What changed?" Selena's face tightened. "He killed my father." "I know. You told me." "No." Selena's voice was cold. "You don't understand. He didn't just kill my father. He made me watch. He made me watch my father die, and then he told me it was my fault. He told me that if I'd been a better daughter, a better fiancée, a better woman, he wouldn't have had to do it." Adrian felt the weight of her words. The cruelty. The manipulation. The sheer evil of it. "I'm sorry," he said. And he meant it. Selena's eyes flickered with something—pain, rage, grief. She pushed it down, her face becoming impassive again. "Sorry doesn't bring them back," she said. "Sorry doesn't give me justice. But the Ledger can. The Ledger has the names, the evidence, the truth. And I know you want the truth as badly as I do." Adrian nodded. "We'll find it. Together." Selena stepped closer. Her voice dropped to a whisper. "There's something else. Something I haven't told anyone." "What?" "Your mother isn't the only one who's been watching you." Selena's eyes were dark, unreadable. "There's someone else. Someone who's been in the shadows from the beginning. Someone who's been manipulating everything." Adrian's blood ran cold. "Who?" "I don't know yet. But I'm close. I've been tracking the money for months. There's a pattern. A pattern that leads back to someone in your past. Someone you trust." Adrian felt the world tilt. Someone in his past. Someone he trusted. His mother had already betrayed him. Who else could it be? "Tell me what you know," he said. Selena shook her head. "Not here. Not now. Meet me tomorrow at Sophia's office. We'll go through everything together." Adrian nodded. "I'll be there." Selena turned and walked back into the fog. Adrian watched her disappear, his mind churning with questions. Someone in his past. Someone he trusted. Someone who'd been manipulating everything from the beginning. *Who?* --- Adrian drove back to the Harbor in silence. The fog had lifted, revealing the city in all its cold, indifferent glory. The lights of the Harbor flickered in the distance, a constellation of broken dreams. He parked the car and walked into the Sunset Bar. The place was still a ruin—shattered glass, bullet holes, bloodstains on the floor. But James and the others had done what they could. The booths were upright. The lights were working. It was a start. James was sitting at the bar, nursing a glass of whiskey. His face was pale, his eyes hollow. The wound in his side was still healing. "Selena's playing you," James said without looking up. "She's been playing you since the beginning." Adrian sat down beside him. "How do you know?" "Because I know her type. She's a survivor. A manipulator. She'll use you for as long as it's useful, and then she'll discard you like garbage." Adrian shook his head. "She's not playing me. She wants the same thing I do—revenge." "Maybe." James took a sip of whiskey. "Or maybe she wants power. Maybe she's using you to take down your mother so she can take her place." Adrian considered that. It was possible. Selena was ambitious, ruthless, and willing to do whatever it took to get what she wanted. She'd already betrayed Damien. Why wouldn't she betray Adrian? "Even if she is," Adrian said, "I need her. I can't do this alone." James looked at him. "You don't have to do it alone. You have me. You have the crew. You have people who believe in you." Adrian met his gaze. "I know. And I'm grateful. But Selena has something I need—information. And I can't afford to turn that down." James studied him for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly. "Just be careful," James said. "Trust no one. Not even her." Adrian smiled. It was a hollow smile, full of bitterness and pain. "I don't trust anyone," he said. "Not anymore. Not even myself."
