"WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!" Daniel yelled. His jaw clenched tightly, holding back his surging anger. His piercing gaze was filled with a fire ready to burn the man in front of him. However, the man merely gave a crooked smile. "Relax, Brother," he said in a casual tone. His hand gently pushed Daniel's chest, forcing the man to take a step back. After that, he straightened Daniel's clothes with an indifferent gesture, brushing his collar as if wiping away invisible dust. "I will explain what I meant by what I said earlier." With a swift movement, Daniel swatted the man's hand away. His eyes remained sharp, like an eagle stalking its prey. Meanwhile, the man in front of him remained unflinching. There was not the slightest ripple of fear on his face. Instead, he crossed his arms over his chest, standing with full confidence. "The voice recording played at the party last night? I was the one who arranged it," he said casually. "I was the one who instigated Ricardo to do that. You want to know the goal? Of course, to get rid of you and get Valerie." Daniel clenched both of his hands until his knuckles turned white. "Yes, the voice did sound exactly like yours," the man continued, his eyes glinting with arrogance. "However, it was merely the result of AI artificial intelligence manipulation. We live in a modern era, Brother. Everything can be manipulated easily. It only takes sophisticated devices, a little intention, and of course... money. And look at the result, very perfect, isn't it?" The man chuckled cynically. A smile bloomed on his lips. "Bastard!" Daniel groaned furiously. His hands shot forward rapidly, grabbing the man's collar tightly. The man instead laughed softly. "I'm not done talking. Listen to me first, Brother." He then forcefully removed Daniel's grip from his collar. Daniel no longer made a sound. Only his gaze, loaded with flashes of anger, was like a fire ready to devour anyone who dared to challenge him. "Last night, after Ricardo spoke to you in the emergency stairs, I also met him." The man's tone lowered, almost resembling a whisper, but enough to make Daniel's eyes widen. Daniel held his breath. His chest rumbled violently. "However, that damn Ricardo really pissed me off!" he said with a face pretending to be disappointed. "He refused to give Valerie to me! He swore he would never hand over his daughter to a man like me. He even said that I am far more disgusting than you! How could I not be furious, Daniel?! Even though I had helped him to get rid of you. I even poured out a lot of money to fabricate that recording! But what was his repayment? He insulted me instead! Damn old man!" Daniel didn't move, but his whole body tensed. Every sentence that came out of the man's mouth felt like a crushing blow hitting his ears. "I truly ran out of patience, Daniel," the man said again. This time a thin, disgusting smile was etched on his face. "Then, I hit him. Very hard! Mercilessly! And... ah, suddenly he fell down the stairs." He paused his sentence, as if deliberately enjoying the frustrated look on Daniel's face. His expression looked so cold and cruel, resembling a psychopath. "Hmm... but I wasn't scared. I immediately kicked his head. Over and over again, Daniel, until finally he died tragically. I swear, I was satisfied seeing him die right before my eyes!" "Bastard! You are truly a disgusting scumbag!" shouted Daniel, his voice booming, breaking the silence of the room. The man staggered. His head jerked to the side due to the hard blow from Daniel's fist. However, even though his body was a bit unsteady, the smile on his face still did not fade. "Heyyy... you dare to hit me, Daniel?" he asked. "Aren't you afraid I will sabotage the CCTV footage in this room? Exactly like what I did to the surveillance camera in the emergency stairs? You must realize, money is the highest throne in this world! And I can do anything with the wealth I have right now!" Daniel stood frozen. Both of his hands clenched so tightly that they trembled violently from the anger pent up to the top of his head. The man's words made his blood boil, but he was aware of his position. The bastard's words in front of him stung with the reality that every step he took was now being watched, and the slightest mistake would turn into a weapon to destroy him. The man chuckled, so satisfied seeing the helplessness carved on Daniel's face. "You have to be extra careful, Daniel," he whispered while stepping closer. "I can even make your punishment much heavier. Even the death penalty is at my fingertips if you dare to mess with me!" Daniel glared at him with blazing eyes. "I swear I will make you pay for what you've done!" "Really? Hmm... should I feel scared? HAHAHAHA!" The man burst out laughing again, this time much louder. "Ah, I guess there is no need. The power in my hands is far too great, Daniel. Too great to be fought by someone like you. Besides, who are you? Just a poor man who doesn't even have anything." Daniel did not reply. He just stood frozen with clenched fists and a hardened jaw, trying with all his might to suppress the surge of emotions raging in his chest. "Whew! That is all I wanted to say to you," the man said while taking a deep breath, as if he had just let go of a heavy burden. He stepped closer to Daniel, leaned his body in, and whispered with heavy, low articulation, "Thank you for being willing to take my place in this place. Oh, just for your information... I did all this not only for Valerie, nor was it an accident getting rid of Ricardo. But, because I really hold a deep grudge against you, and you simply had to be eliminated!" He slowly pulled his body back. Daniel struck him with a deadly glare, but the man didn't care at all. He turned around and walked lightly, leaving the room with an aura of victory that further boiled Daniel's blood. Daniel stood dazed. His hands rose, gripping his messy hair while bowing his head deeply. An overwhelming sense of frustration ambushed the walls of his consciousness. He had completely lost his way. Rotting behind iron bars due to a criminal act he absolutely did not commit? Was it true that such a terrible fate would befall him? Would he lose his freedom and spend the rest of his life in a prison cell to pay for someone else's sins? "No!" Daniel groaned lowly. "Oh, God! Why does it have to be me?! Aaaarrrrhh!" He slammed the table in front of him with both palms until his body hunched slightly. His breathing was heavy, his eyes stared blankly ahead, shrouded in incredibly dense confusion. "He said he did it out of revenge against me? But what is the reason? What did I do wrong? I don't even know the man! What is the real motive behind all this? Haaahh..." Daniel took a deep breath. That barrage of questions kept spinning in his mind. His eyes narrowed, forcing his brain to work hard to find a loophole and a way out. "I have to get out of this damn place. No matter what it takes!" Daniel straightened his body again. His mind kept racing against time. Until suddenly, a quick memory flashed in his mind. "That Madam!" he muttered softly. A glimmer of hope suddenly reignited the sparkle in his eyes. "That Madam can definitely help me get out of this damn place!" The look in his eyes, which was originally dimmed by despair, now changed completely. "I must urge the police to find her. I have the right to defend myself, right?" To be continued
