CHAPTER FORTY You know what I’ve learned about magic moments? That’s what they are—magic. They never last. They can’t. By the time you realize them, they’re gone. Nothing showed me that more than King Porky showing up dead after a moment of relief. You can always count on lich water to give you perspective. Call me paranoid, but this adventure taught me to start looking over my shoulder whenever I have one of those magic moments. But the king’s passing wasn’t all bad. The streets were bone quiet and sober. You couldn’t find a vial of crack even if you wanted to. The leftover members of the King’s Bandits knew what happened to King Porky, and they were spooked. I didn’t blame them for feeling that way. I was spooked too. But it was nice to enjoy the last few days with Marlese and Malcol
