Chapter Seven

The Man Beneath the Beast The mountains were unusually quiet that night. Silver moonlight poured through the cave entrance, bathing the hidden chamber in a soft glow. The blue crystals embedded in the walls sparkled like tiny stars, making the cave seem almost magical. Aurora lay asleep on a bed of moss. For the first time in years, her face looked peaceful. No tears. No fear. No pain. The exhaustion of years of rejection had finally loosened its grip on her. Nearby, the giant black wolf watched her. As always. His massive body rested against the cave wall, but his glowing red eyes never left her sleeping form. The curse inside him churned violently. It always did when the moon was full. Pain shot through every muscle. His bones felt as if they were being crushed and rebuilt repeatedly. For years, the agony had driven him mad. For years, every full moon had been torture. But tonight was different. Because she was here. A soft whimper escaped him. Aurora stirred slightly in her sleep. Immediately, the beast fell silent. His ears flattened. Waiting. Watching. When she settled again, relief washed through him. The giant wolf slowly lowered his head. The familiar warmth surrounding Aurora seemed to seep into his very soul. Calming the endless storm inside him. Healing wounds he had forgotten existed. Then suddenly— A silver light exploded around him. The wolf's eyes widened. The curse recoiled. Pain surged through his body. His massive frame trembled violently. Muscles contracted. Bones cracked. The cave filled with flashes of silver light. A low growl became a strangled gasp. The transformation lasted only moments. When it ended... The giant wolf was gone. A man stood in his place. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Barefoot. Long black hair fell across his face. Ancient scars covered his skin. For several seconds, he simply stared at his own hands. Disbelief filled his golden eyes. Human. He was human. After years trapped inside the beast... He had finally transformed. The man clenched his fists. His breathing became uneven. Impossible. Nobody had ever broken through the curse. Nobody. Then his gaze slowly drifted toward the sleeping girl. Aurora. The answer was Aurora. A smile touched his lips. Small at first. Then genuine. Perhaps the first genuine smile he had worn in years. Slowly, he approached her. Carefully. As though afraid he might wake her. Moonlight illuminated Aurora's sleeping face. A loose strand of hair had fallen across her cheek. Without thinking, he reached out. Then stopped himself. His hand hovered in the air. The king's expression softened. This tiny girl. This rejected girl. This sacrifice everyone had discarded. She had accomplished what countless healers, witches, and elders could not. She had given him peace. Aurora shifted slightly. Murmuring something unintelligible in her sleep. The man's smile widened. For years, loneliness had been his only companion. Years of darkness. Years of pain. Years of being feared. Even his own people looked at him like a monster. No one visited. No one stayed. No one cared. Until her. His gaze lingered on her sleeping form. Warmth spread through his chest. A strange feeling. Unfamiliar. Dangerous. Yet precious. "It seems..." His voice was rough from years of disuse. Barely above a whisper. "...my days won't be lonely anymore." The moonlight reflected in his eyes. For the first time in years, the cursed Alpha King felt something beyond pain. Hope. A future. Someone worth fighting for. Someone worth returning to humanity for. Aurora knew none of this. She slept peacefully beneath the moon. Unaware that the monster everyone feared was watching over her. Unaware that the man hidden beneath the beast had already begun falling for her. And most importantly... Unaware that her arrival had started a chain of events that would shake every pack in the kingdom. Far away, enemies were already moving. Schemes were already unfolding. And soon, the secret of the cursed Alpha King would no longer remain hidden. But for tonight... There was only silence. Only moonlight. And a lonely king smiling as he watched the girl who had unknowingly saved him.
