When The Door Breaks

1255 Words
The silence after Damien’s voice should have been comforting. It wasn’t. Because outside the door, there were still footsteps. And inside the room, Alina could hear her own heartbeat louder than anything else. She pressed her back against the wall, eyes fixed on the reinforced door. “Okay… okay…” she whispered to herself. “Just breathe.” But breathing didn’t help when the handle shifted again. This time, harder. Alina flinched. “Damien!” she called out, louder now. “They’re still here!” No immediate answer came. That gap of silence was enough to make her chest tighten again. Then— His voice returned through the comm system. “Step away from the door.” She hesitated. “What are you going to do?” A pause. Then Damien said, very calmly: “I’m ending it.” That tone wasn’t reassurance. It was finality. Alina stepped back quickly without thinking, her back pressing against the far wall. “Okay… okay,” she whispered again. “Just don’t blow anything up while I’m inside the room, please.” Outside the Door — Damien’s Line Breaks Damien stood directly in front of the reinforced door. Two intruders lay unconscious behind him. More footsteps echoed in the distance. But he wasn’t looking at them anymore. His focus was locked on the door. On her. “Boss,” one of his men said quickly, approaching. “We’ve cleared the corridor, but more are moving in from the east wing.” Damien didn’t turn. “Hold them.” “Yes, sir.” Another voice came through comms, tense. “They’re regrouping. This isn’t a random attack—it’s organized extraction.” Damien’s jaw tightened. Extraction. Not invasion. Not destruction. They were here for her. That meant only one thing. Someone knew exactly what she was. His hand rested on the door lock. Alina’s voice came faintly from inside again. “Damien… I can hear them outside…” That was it. Something in him shifted. Not panic. Not fear. Control breaking. He lowered his voice slightly. “Alina,” he said, “don’t open anything. Don’t respond to anyone except me.” Inside, she swallowed hard. “I’m not opening anything! I don’t even want to breathe right now!” A faint pause. Then, for a second— Almost like a whisper: “Good.” The Third Force Arrives A new sound echoed through the corridor. Slow footsteps. Not rushed like the intruders. Not military like Damien’s men. Deliberate. Confident. Familiar. Damien’s expression changed slightly. Not surprise. Recognition. “Boss,” one of his men said cautiously, “someone else just entered the west corridor.” Damien finally turned his head slightly. And that was when she appeared. Lara. Walking through the chaos like it didn’t exist. Her heels clicked softly against the floor. Completely unbothered by the alarms. By the tension. By the bodies on the ground. Her eyes landed immediately on Damien. Then shifted to the door behind him. A faint smile. “So she’s really here,” Lara said softly. Damien’s voice dropped instantly. “I told you to stay out.” Lara raised a brow. “And miss this? I’d never.” A guard stepped forward. “Ma’am, this area is restricted—” Before he could finish, Lara glanced at him once. Cold. And he stopped speaking immediately. Not fear. Command recognition. Alina, inside the room, heard the unfamiliar voice. Her stomach tightened instantly. “Damien?” she called out again. “Who is that?” Silence. Then Damien answered: “No one you need to worry about.” But his tone had changed slightly. That was all Alina needed to hear. She frowned. “That’s not comforting!” Jealousy in the Middle of Chaos Lara stepped closer to Damien. “You’re getting soft,” she said casually. Damien didn’t respond. His attention stayed on the door. On the girl inside. Lara followed his gaze. “And you really locked her in a safe room?” she added lightly. “That’s new.” Damien’s voice turned colder. “Lara.” She smiled slightly. “Relax. I’m not here to fight you.” A beat. Then she added: “I’m here because you’re about to make a mistake.” That made Damien finally look at her. And when he did, the temperature dropped. “What mistake.” Lara tilted her head slightly. “You’re prioritizing her over the breach.” Silence. Even the men around them froze slightly. Because that was the first time someone had said it out loud. Damien didn’t deny it. Didn’t confirm it either. Just silence. Lara stepped closer, lowering her voice. “They know she’s here, Damien. And if you keep standing here playing guard—” “I am not playing anything,” he interrupted sharply. A pause. Then Lara softened her tone slightly. “You’re attached.” That word landed heavily. Damien’s expression tightened. Inside the room, Alina heard a faint shift in voices. She pressed her ear to the door again. “What are they saying…” she whispered. Damien finally turned slightly away from Lara. “I don’t have time for this,” he said coldly. But Lara didn’t move. Instead, she glanced at the door again. “And what about her?” she asked softly. “How long before she realizes she’s not just ‘protected’?” Damien’s jaw tightened. “That’s not your concern.” Lara smiled faintly. “It becomes my concern when your emotions start compromising security.” That word again. Emotions. Damien’s silence this time was different. He didn’t deny it fast enough. And Lara noticed. Of course she did. Inside — Alina Breaks Alina stepped away from the door slightly, breathing unevenly now. “They’re talking about me,” she whispered. Her fingers curled tightly. “Okay… okay, I need to get out of here.” She scanned the room. No windows. No vents big enough. Just reinforced walls. But then— A faint clicking sound came from the door. Her breath caught. Someone was unlocking it. Slowly. Alina stepped back instantly. “No—no, no—” The lock turned. Once. Twice. Then stopped. Silence. Alina froze completely. “…Damien?” she whispered. No answer. Then— The door opened. Just slightly. Not enough to fully expose the room. Just enough for a shadow to appear. A figure stood at the crack. Not Damien. Alina’s breath stopped. The figure spoke softly. “Found you.” Outside — Damien Reacts Damien felt it instantly. The shift. The break. His head snapped toward the door. “Alina,” he said sharply. No response. He moved instantly. But Lara grabbed his arm. “Damien—” He turned. And for the first time, there was something in his eyes that made even Lara pause. Danger without control. “Let go,” he said. Slow. Measured. Deadly calm. Lara released him immediately. And Damien moved. Fast. No hesitation now. No restraint. The hallway behind him erupted into chaos as he slammed his hand against the door control system. Override code. Emergency unlock sequence. The system resisted for half a second. Then gave in. The door unlocked fully. Damien didn’t wait. He pushed it open. And stepped inside. Only to find— Alina standing frozen. A shadow at the door. And danger already inside his territory. Damien’s voice dropped low. “Get away from her.” The intruder smiled faintly. “Too late.” And that was when Damien’s control finally broke completely.
