The Moment He Stops Holding Back

1309 Words
The silence after Lara left didn’t feel empty. It felt loaded. Like something had been dropped between Alina and Damien that neither of them knew how to pick up again. Alina stood still in the hallway, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, but her mind was anything but still. You’re not his first obsession. Those words kept replaying in her head like a broken record. She finally turned to him. “Is it true?” she asked again, softer this time. “What she said…” Damien didn’t answer immediately. That alone was dangerous. Because Damien always answered quickly. Clearly. Without hesitation. But now? He was silent. His jaw tightened slightly, like he was deciding what version of truth she could survive. Finally, he spoke. “Lara talks too much.” Alina scoffed slightly, but it came out weak. “That’s not an answer.” A pause. Then Damien looked at her fully. And said: “Yes.” One word. Clean. Final. Alina blinked. “…Yes what?” His gaze didn’t shift. “I’ve had people I’ve protected before you.” Something inside her tightened instantly. “So she wasn’t lying,” Alina said quietly. Damien didn’t deny it. That hurt more than she expected. She let out a short, humorless laugh. “Wow. So I’m just… another project?” That made his expression change slightly. Not anger. Something sharper. “You’re not a project.” “Then what am I?” she snapped. Silence. The kind that felt like pressure building in a sealed room. Damien stepped closer. Alina didn’t move back this time. Not because she wasn’t scared. But because she was tired of running inside her own fear. “You’re the reason I broke my own rules,” he said quietly. That made her pause. “…Your rules?” Damien’s eyes darkened slightly. “I don’t keep people close.” Alina tilted her head slightly. “Yet here I am.” A faint shift in his expression. “Yes.” The honesty was disarming. Annoyingly disarming. Alina looked away first. “That doesn’t answer anything.” Damien’s voice lowered. “It answers enough.” Before she could respond, loud footsteps echoed from the far end of the hallway. Multiple. Fast. Urgent. A guard rushed in, breathing slightly heavier than usual. “Boss,” he said quickly. “We have movement on the outer perimeter.” Instantly, the atmosphere changed. Damien’s entire posture shifted. Not panic. Control sharpening into something dangerous. “Report,” he said. The guard swallowed. “Unknown group. They’re probing the east gate again.” Alina frowned slightly. “Probing?” Damien didn’t look at her. “Testing defenses,” he said calmly. Alina’s stomach tightened. “So… attackers.” Silence. Damien finally looked at her briefly. “Yes.” That simple answer made her chest tighten again. The guard continued, “They’re not backing off this time. They might breach within the hour.” Damien turned slightly. “Lock down all entry points,” he said immediately. “Increase surveillance. No movement without clearance.” “Yes, Boss.” The guard left quickly. Alina watched him go, then turned back to Damien. “…So this is normal for you?” she asked quietly. Damien didn’t answer immediately. Then— “Yes.” Alina shook her head slightly. “You’re insane.” A faint pause. Then Damien said: “Only alive people are called that.” That shut her up for a second. He turned slightly toward her. “You need to stay inside the main room,” he said. Alina crossed her arms. “You really think I’m going to listen to orders after everything?” A flicker in his eyes. Not irritation. Something deeper. “You will,” he said calmly. Alina frowned. “Why are you so sure?” Damien stepped closer. Close enough now that the air between them felt tight again. “Because you don’t understand what’s outside yet.” Alina’s voice dropped slightly. “Then explain it.” A pause. Longer this time. Then Damien said quietly: “If they get inside… they won’t ask questions.” That sentence made her stomach drop. Before she could respond, another alarm echoed faintly through the mansion. Not loud. But sharp enough to signal urgency. Damien turned immediately. And this time, he didn’t hesitate. “Go back to the room,” he ordered. Alina shook her head. “No.” His eyes snapped to hers. “Alina.” Something in his tone was different now. Stricter. More final. But she was already overwhelmed. “No, I’m not hiding like some—some fragile thing while people are running around outside!” Damien stepped closer instantly. And this time, his voice dropped dangerously low. “You are not fragile.” Alina blinked slightly. That wasn’t what she expected. He continued: “You are valuable.” That word hit differently. Heavy. Uncomfortable. Alina’s voice softened slightly. “That doesn’t make me feel better.” Damien didn’t answer. Instead, he studied her face for a moment. Then something changed in his expression. Decision. Before she could react, he reached out and grabbed her wrist. Firm. Controlled. Not rough—but undeniable. Alina gasped slightly. “Hey—what are you doing?” Damien didn’t answer. He pulled her forward. Fast. Alina stumbled slightly as he guided her down the hallway. “Damien, stop—where are you taking me?!” No answer. Just fast steps. Focused urgency. They moved through corridors she hadn’t seen before—deeper into the mansion, away from the main hall. Alina struggled slightly. “You can’t just drag me around like this!” Still no answer. They reached a reinforced door. Two guards opened it instantly. Damien finally stopped and looked at her. His grip loosened slightly—but he didn’t let go completely. “You stay here,” he said firmly. Alina frowned. “Where is here?” A safe room,” he replied. Alina pulled her wrist slightly. “I’m not staying locked in another room!” That was when something in Damien shifted. His expression hardened. And for the first time… He looked truly serious. “You think I brought you here to trap you?” he asked quietly. Alina hesitated slightly. Damien stepped closer. His voice lowered. “I brought you here because this is the only place they can’t reach you easily.” A pause. Then, softer: “And because I don’t trust myself to keep you safe anywhere else right now.” That last line made her freeze. Her heart skipped slightly—not from fear this time. From something else. Something heavier. Damien released her wrist slowly. Not fully letting go emotionally. Just physically. “You stay,” he said again. Alina hesitated. For the first time, she didn’t immediately argue. Because something in his voice… Wasn’t control. It was restraint. Like he was holding back more than just enemies outside. Before she could respond, one of the guards spoke urgently outside the door. “Boss, they’re at the outer wall!” The tension snapped instantly. Damien turned sharply. And for the first time since Alina met him… His calm cracked slightly. Not fear. But something far more dangerous. Intent. He looked at her one last time. Long. Heavy. And said quietly: “Don’t move from here. No matter what you hear.” Alina swallowed. “Damien—” But he was already turning away. The door began to close. And right before it shut completely… He said something that lingered in the air long after he was gone. “If they get through me… they get to you.” The door locked. Silence fell. And for the first time in Damien’s house… Alina realized she wasn’t just being protected anymore. She was the reason everything was about to burn.
