Lara's Truth

1256 Words
The hallway outside the safe room felt colder than before. Not because anything had changed in the mansion itself—but because everyone in it now understood one thing: The breach had already crossed Damien’s limits. And Damien did not tolerate that twice. He walked with steady steps, but there was nothing calm about him anymore. Every guard who passed him lowered their head instantly. No one spoke. No one asked questions. Because they could feel it. Something inside him had shifted. Not broken. Unleashed. At the end of the corridor, Lara was waiting. Leaning casually against the wall like she belonged there more than the guards did. She straightened immediately when she saw him. “Finally,” she said. Damien didn’t slow down. “You ignored my order,” he said flatly. Lara exhaled. “I came because I knew they’d strike tonight.” He stopped in front of her. Close. Too close. “You don’t decide when you come into my territory,” he said quietly. Lara didn’t flinch. “I just saved your situation from getting worse.” A pause. Then Damien’s voice dropped lower. “Speak.” Lara studied him for a second. Then her eyes flicked briefly toward the safe room door behind him. “She’s attracting attention faster than you expected,” she said. Damien’s jaw tightened slightly. “I already know that.” Lara shook her head slightly. “No. You don’t understand the scale.” Silence. Even the guards behind them seemed to disappear into the walls. Lara continued, voice calmer now. “The group that just attacked you isn’t random,” she said. “They’re one of the outer factions.” Damien’s expression didn’t change. “I know.” Lara stepped closer slightly. “And they didn’t come for you,” she added. That made him pause. Just a fraction. Lara watched him carefully. “They came for her bloodline.” Silence fell again. This time heavier. Damien’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Explain.” Lara exhaled slowly, like she was choosing her words carefully. “You didn’t tell her everything,” she said. “About her father.” A pause. Then Damien replied quietly: “That’s not your concern.” Lara gave a faint, almost bitter smile. “It becomes my concern when she starts attracting the wrong attention inside your house.” A beat. Then she added something softer. “Damien… they think she’s a key.” That word hung in the air. Key. Alina, inside the safe room, was pacing again. Unaware of what was being said outside. But something in her chest still felt tight. Like the world was moving without her. Damien’s voice lowered. “A key to what.” Lara hesitated. Then finally: “To what your world has been trying to unlock for years.” Silence. Even Damien didn’t respond immediately. That was rare. Lara stepped closer again, lowering her voice. “Her father wasn’t just erased,” she said. “He was sealed out of something.” Damien’s gaze sharpened instantly. “Be careful,” he warned. But Lara continued anyway. “And now that she’s back in your system… everything is reacting.” A pause. Then she added: “You’re not just protecting her, Damien.” Her eyes locked with his. “You’re containing her.” That sentence landed heavier than the rest. For a moment, Damien didn’t speak. Didn’t move. Then— “What do you want,” he said finally. Lara studied him. “Information,” she replied simply. “And control of the narrative before this becomes uncontrollable.” Damien’s expression hardened slightly. “There is no control outside me.” Lara let out a short breath. “That’s your mistake.” Inside the Safe Room Alina stopped pacing. Something felt off. She wasn’t hearing footsteps anymore. Not alarms. Not movement. Just silence. Too much silence. She moved closer to the door again. “Damien?” she called out carefully. No answer. Her chest tightened slightly. “Okay… this is starting to feel worse.” She pressed her ear against the door again. Nothing. Then— A faint vibration. Like distant movement returning. She stepped back quickly. “What is going on out there…” she whispered. Back Outside — Damien & Lara Damien turned slightly away from Lara. “Whatever you think you know,” he said coldly, “you don’t involve her.” Lara frowned. “Then why is she the center of every faction moving right now?” Silence. Damien didn’t answer. Because that was the part he didn’t like either. Lara stepped closer again. “Listen to me,” she said more firmly now. “If they realize what she actually is—” “They won’t,” Damien cut in immediately. Lara narrowed her eyes. “You can’t stop everyone.” A pause. Then Damien replied quietly: “I only need to stop the ones who get close.” That sentence wasn’t a threat. It was a promise. And Lara knew it. But she still wasn’t finished. “Damien,” she said, softer now. “You’re getting attached.” That word again. Damien’s eyes darkened slightly. “No.” Lara tilted her head. “You broke a man’s arm for her tonight.” Silence. Damien didn’t deny it. Lara exhaled slowly. “That’s not just protection anymore.” A beat. Then she added: “That’s obsession.” That word finally shifted something in him. Very small. But real. Inside the safe room, Alina suddenly heard the lock click again. Her head snapped toward it instantly. The door didn’t open fully. Just slightly. A guard’s voice came through. “Miss… stay back from the door.” Alina frowned. “What? Why?” No answer. The door shut again. Fast. Alina stepped back slowly. “…Okay,” she whispered. “That’s not normal.” Damien’s Decision Lara watched him carefully. “You’re going to have to choose,” she said quietly. Damien looked at her. “Between what.” Lara didn’t hesitate. “Control… or her.” Silence. That question hung in the air like a blade. Damien’s jaw tightened slightly. Then he turned. Not toward Lara. Toward the safe room. And for the first time since the chaos started… He walked faster. Inside — The Shift Alina backed away from the door as the lock clicked again. This time… slower. Deliberate. “Okay, okay, okay…” she whispered. “Why does it feel like something is changing?” The handle moved. Once. Twice. Then stopped. A voice came from the hallway speaker. But it wasn’t Damien. It was Lara. “Alina,” she said calmly. Alina froze. “…Who is that?” Lara continued. “You need to listen carefully.” Alina stepped back slowly. “What is going on?” A pause. Then Lara said: “You’re not just being protected in that room.” Alina’s heart tightened. “You’re being decided.” Silence. Then— Damien’s voice cut in sharply through the system. “Lara. Stop.” But it was too late. Alina’s breath shook slightly. “Decided about what?” she asked quietly. Silence followed. Long. Heavy. Then Lara spoke again. “Whether you stay human in this world…” A pause. “…or become the reason it changes.” The speaker cut off. Silence returned. Alina stood frozen. “…What does that mean?” she whispered. Outside the room… Damien stopped walking. And for the first time that night… He looked like he didn’t like the answer either.
