He paused, smiling, before he continued, “I know that you are exactly the right man at this particular moment for Singapore.” “Thank you,” Lord Selwyn said. “And I am very grateful to you for having come so far to find me.” He saw an apprehensive look on Adrian Meredith’s face. He had obviously thought that he was going to refuse outright what had been suggested. “What I would like to do,” Lord Selwyn said, “is to sleep on the proposition and consider it very carefully.” He rose to his feet. “I know that you must be tired after such a long journey. May I suggest that you rest and return tomorrow morning, when I know my host will be delighted to welcome you here.” He paused thoughtfully and then said, “I hope then to have my answer ready for you to take back with you to England.”
