The SettlementGaidel was cold. She knew she was on that edge of being awake and asleep. Each time she started to wake the warmth of the sun on her skin and the fresh humid smell of things green and growing lulled her back to sleep.
She was dreaming of the Three Arrows and her father. They used to take walks in the Redwood in the high summer, the sun warming her skin and the smell of green in the air. She had been walking through another forest recently, but couldn't recall exactly where. She was with Two Elks. The thought reminded her of their fight with the vargan in the Drops near the Cradle.
