The Appointment He Followed

787 Words
The private entrance smelled like antiseptic and polished floors—no waiting room, no strangers, no questions. Dr. Mira Chen met Evelyn in the hallway, her expression calm but her eyes alert. “You look like you’re about to faint,” Mira said, guiding her into an exam room. Evelyn tried to smile. “I might.” Mira shut the door and lowered her voice. “Tell me everything.” Evelyn’s confession came out in fragments—two pink lines, a contract marriage, one night that wasn’t supposed to exist, and the kind of family that turned secrets into weapons. Mira listened without judgment. When Evelyn finished, Mira exhaled slowly. “Okay,” she said. “We do this properly.” The test was quick. The confirmation wasn’t. Mira’s face stayed professional as she studied the results. Then she turned the screen toward Evelyn. “Positive,” she said softly. “You’re pregnant.” Evelyn’s vision blurred. She clutched the edge of the exam bed like she might fall off the planet. “How far?” she whispered. “Early,” Mira replied. “But real. And Evelyn… you need to start prenatal care immediately.” Evelyn nodded numbly. Care. Vitamins. Checkups. A whole future that didn’t fit inside her contract. Mira placed a hand on her shoulder. “Do you want to tell him?” Evelyn’s laugh was shaky and sharp. “Tell Damian Blackwood that his heir is growing inside me? That would be suicide.” Mira’s eyes narrowed. “Is it his?” Evelyn’s cheeks burned. “Yes.” “Then it’s already dangerous,” Mira said. “Whether you tell him or not.” Evelyn swallowed hard. “I need time.” Mira sighed, then opened a drawer and slid a folder toward her. “No names on paperwork. No digital trail. I’ll protect you as much as I can.” Evelyn’s eyes stung. “Thank you.” Mira hesitated. “One more thing.” “What?” Mira leaned closer. “Someone asked for the appointment list at the front desk. A man. Tall. Expensive suit. Controlled voice.” Evelyn’s blood went ice-cold. She didn’t need a description. Damian. “He didn’t get anything,” Mira continued quickly. “I refused. But… Evelyn, are you sure you weren’t followed?” Evelyn’s breath turned shallow. Her mind flashed through the day—Damian’s questions, his stare, the way he’d touched her lipstick like he owned the right. “I—” she started. A soft knock sounded. Both women froze. Then the door handle moved. Mira’s eyes widened. “I locked—” The door opened anyway. Damian stepped in. His gaze flicked to Mira, then landed on Evelyn with the precision of a blade. “You’re late,” he said. Evelyn’s mouth went dry. “What are you doing here?” Damian didn’t answer immediately. His eyes dropped—not to her face, but to the folder on the bed. To the faint tremor in her hands. Then he looked back up. “What are you hiding?” he asked quietly. Evelyn’s heart hammered. “Nothing.” Damian stepped closer. Mira shifted slightly, protective. “This is a medical office,” Mira said firmly. “You can’t—” Damian’s eyes cut to her. “I can.” Mira held her ground. “Not here.” Damian’s jaw tightened. Then he turned back to Evelyn. His voice lowered, dangerous in its calm. “Tell me,” he said. “Now.” Evelyn’s chest tightened until it hurt. She couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t think. If she told him… he might take control. He might claim the baby. He might lock her into the Blackwood machine forever. If she didn’t… he would dig until he found the truth anyway. Evelyn’s voice came out fragile. “It’s not what you think.” Damian’s gaze sharpened. “Then say what it is.” Evelyn’s fingers curled around the folder. Her throat burned. And the words that would change everything pressed against her lips— But before she could speak, Damian’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, and something in his expression shifted. “Aunt Celeste is here,” he said flatly. Evelyn blinked. “Already?” “She arrived early,” Damian said. His eyes didn’t leave Evelyn. “And she asked about you.” The room tilted. Mira’s voice was gentle but urgent. “Evelyn—” Damian took a final step closer, lowering his voice to something only Evelyn could hear. “If you’re sick,” he murmured, “I need to know why.” Evelyn’s stomach clenched. Because the truth wasn’t just why. It was who. And now his family was waiting.
