CHAPTER SIX – First Night, First Tears “Some nights change your life forever… not because of what happened, but because of what you felt.” --- Jessy couldn’t sleep. Again. But tonight was worse. Much worse. --- Every time she closed her eyes— She saw blood. The chair. The fear in that man’s face. And Kay standing over him like darkness itself. --- She sat up quickly, breathing unevenly. The room suddenly felt too small. Too quiet. Too close. --- “Who are you…” she whispered into the darkness. Because the man downstairs— That wasn’t just a rich businessman. That was someone dangerous. Someone capable of terrible things. --- And yet— Why did part of her still feel safe around him? That was the part terrifying her the most. --- Jessy got out of bed and walked toward the window. Rain had started again. Soft at first. Then heavier. The city lights blurred beneath the storm. --- Her chest hurt. Not physically. Emotionally. Everything was happening too fast. --- Her father betrayed her. She was trapped in a stranger’s house. And somehow— The stranger was becoming harder to hate. --- A tear rolled down her cheek before she noticed it. Then another. --- Jessy wiped them away angrily. “No,” she whispered. “No, don’t do this.” She refused to become weak here. She refused to become another girl blinded by money and charm. --- But the memory of Kay’s voice downstairs replayed in her mind. “You shouldn’t see this side of me.” --- Why would a man like him care what she saw? --- A knock interrupted her thoughts. Jessy froze. Slowly, she turned toward the door. --- Another knock. This time softer. --- “It’s me,” a female voice said. The woman from before. The one who explained the rules. --- Jessy opened the door slightly. The woman looked at her for a moment. Then sighed. “You saw it, didn’t you?” Jessy looked away. “That obvious?” “Yes.” --- The woman stepped inside. For the first time, she didn’t seem cold. Just tired. --- “What’s your name?” Jessy asked quietly. The woman blinked slightly. “Nora.” “Jessy.” “I know.” --- Silence settled between them. Then Nora looked toward the bed. “You should sleep.” Jessy laughed bitterly. “How?” --- Nora didn’t answer immediately. Because there was no real answer. --- “Does he do that often?” Jessy asked softly. Nora’s expression changed carefully. “You should stop asking questions about things you don’t understand.” “That means yes.” --- Nora crossed her arms. “Kay protects what belongs to him.” Jessy frowned instantly. “I don’t belong to him.” Nora looked at her for a long moment. Then said quietly— “You should hope that becomes true.” --- Jessy’s stomach tightened. “What does that mean?” Nora hesitated. Like she was deciding how much to say. --- “There are people who want what Kay has,” she finally said. “Money. Power. His empire.” Jessy listened carefully. “And?” “And people like that don’t fight clean.” --- The realization hit slowly. Then all at once. --- “That man downstairs…” Jessy whispered. “He was sent here?” Nora nodded once. --- “For me?” Silence. --- That silence was enough. --- Jessy stepped back slightly. Her breathing uneven again. “No…” --- Nora’s voice softened. “You’re connected to him now.” Jessy shook her head quickly. “No. I’m not. I didn’t choose this.” “That doesn’t matter.” --- Jessy’s eyes burned. “This is insane.” Nora didn’t disagree. --- Rain hit the windows harder now. The storm growing louder. --- “Why are you telling me this?” Jessy asked. Nora looked at her carefully. “Because I’ve seen girls come and go in this house.” Jessy’s chest tightened slightly. “But you…” Nora continued softly. “You look at him differently.” --- Jessy frowned immediately. “No, I don’t.” “Yes,” Nora said calmly. “You do.” --- Jessy looked away quickly. Because maybe— Just maybe— Nora wasn’t completely wrong. --- And that scared her. --- A sudden knock at the door interrupted them both. Three sharp knocks. Controlled. Heavy. --- Jessy’s breath caught instantly. She knew who it was. --- Nora walked toward the door first and opened it. Kay stood there. Still in black. Still calm. But there was blood on his hand. --- Jessy’s stomach turned. --- Kay’s eyes moved past Nora immediately. Straight to Jessy. --- “She okay?” he asked quietly. Nora nodded once. “She’ll survive.” --- Jessy stared at him. “You’re asking if I’m okay?” Kay looked at her fully now. “Yes.” --- The room became quiet. Strangely quiet. --- Jessy folded her arms tightly. “You scared me.” The truth slipped out before she could stop it. --- Something changed in his eyes. Just slightly. --- “I know.” --- Jessy blinked. That wasn’t the response she expected. --- “You know?” she repeated. Kay stepped into the room slowly. “People usually fear me after seeing that side.” Jessy swallowed hard. “Shouldn’t I?” A pause. Then— “Probably.” --- Jessy stared at him. Trying to understand how someone could sound so honest and dangerous at the same time. --- Kay glanced at Nora. “Leave us.” Nora hesitated briefly. Then nodded and walked out quietly. The door closed behind her. --- Now it was just them. Again. --- Jessy suddenly became very aware of how close he was standing. How large the room felt. How fast her heart was beating. --- “You should sleep,” Kay said quietly. Jessy let out a soft laugh. “You keep saying that like sleep is possible here.” --- Kay’s eyes stayed on her. “Are you crying because of what you saw…” A pause. “Or because you’re afraid of me?” --- Jessy opened her mouth. Then closed it again. Because she didn’t know the answer. --- Finally, she whispered— “I don’t understand you.” --- Something dark flickered through his expression. “You’re not supposed to.” --- Another silence. Long. Heavy. Dangerous. --- Then unexpectedly— Kay reached out slowly. Jessy froze. His fingers brushed against her cheek gently. Wiping away the tear she hadn’t noticed falling. --- The touch was soft. Too soft. It confused her more than violence ever could. --- “Don’t cry,” he said quietly. Jessy’s breath shook slightly. “You’re the reason I’m crying.” --- His hand paused for a second. Then slowly dropped. --- And for the first time— Kay looked almost guilty. --- “I told myself I wouldn’t drag you into this world,” he murmured more to himself than to her. Jessy frowned slightly. “Then why did you?” --- Kay looked at her for a long moment. A dangerous man. A broken man. Maybe both. --- “Because the moment I saw you…” His voice lowered. “…I couldn’t let you go.” --- Jessy’s heart stopped. --- The rain outside thundered louder. But inside that room— Everything felt still. --- And for the first time since arriving there— Jessy realized the most dangerous thing in Kay’s world… Wasn’t his enemies. Wasn’t his violence. Wasn’t even his power. --- It was the way he could look at her… Like she already belonged in his darkness. --- “Sometimes love doesn’t begin with softness… sometimes it begins with fear, confusion, and the inability to walk away.”
