CHAPTER 7: HIS SHADOW

CHAPTER SEVEN – His Shadow “The closer you stand to darkness, the harder it becomes to remember what light felt like.” --- Jessy avoided Kay the next morning. Not intentionally. At least, that’s what she told herself. --- But after last night— After the tears. After his touch. After the way he looked at her and said I couldn’t let you go— Being near him suddenly felt dangerous in an entirely different way. --- Not because he might hurt her. Because he might not. And somehow… That terrified her more. --- Jessy walked quickly through the hallway, keeping her eyes down. She just needed space. Time to think. Time to breathe. --- Unfortunately— Kay’s house didn’t believe in peace. --- “Jessy.” She froze instantly. That voice. Low. Controlled. Too familiar already. --- Slowly, she turned around. Kay stood at the end of the hallway, dressed in black again, one hand in his pocket. Like always— Calm. Perfect. Unreadable. --- Jessy hated how her heart reacted every time she saw him. --- “You’re avoiding me,” he said. Not a question. A fact. --- “I’m busy.” His eyes moved slowly over her. “You’re walking.” Jessy folded her arms. “And you’re watching.” A dangerous silence followed. Then— A small smile touched the corner of his lips. “There she is.” Jessy frowned. “What does that mean?” “The girl who argues with me.” --- Her chest tightened slightly. She didn’t answer. --- Kay walked toward her slowly. Every step deliberate. Every movement confident. Jessy stayed where she was, refusing to move first. But her pulse betrayed her. --- When he finally stopped in front of her, the hallway suddenly felt too small. --- “You didn’t sleep,” he said quietly. Jessy blinked. “How do you know that?” “You have shadows under your eyes.” The irony of that almost made her laugh. --- Jessy looked away first. “I’m fine.” “You’re lying.” --- Her jaw tightened. “You don’t know me well enough to say that.” Kay leaned slightly closer. “I know fear when I see it.” --- Jessy swallowed hard. Because he was right. --- “Good,” he murmured. That annoyed her instantly. “What’s good about it?” “It means you’re smart enough to understand where you are.” --- Jessy stepped back slightly. “And where exactly am I, Kay?” A pause. Then— “My world.” --- The words wrapped around her like chains. --- Jessy laughed softly, but there was no humor in it. “Your world feels more like a prison.” Something dark flashed in his eyes. “It can be.” --- Silence. --- Then suddenly— A loud crash echoed downstairs. Jessy jumped slightly. Kay didn’t. --- One of the guards rushed into the hallway. “Sir—” “What happened?” “We caught someone trying to get through the back gate.” Jessy’s stomach dropped instantly. Again? --- The guard hesitated before continuing. “He had pictures.” Kay’s expression hardened immediately. “What kind of pictures?” The guard glanced briefly toward Jessy. And that was enough. --- Kay’s entire body went still. Dangerously still. --- “Bring him to me,” he said coldly. --- Jessy’s chest tightened. “No,” she said quickly. Both men looked at her. --- “You can’t just keep hurting people every time something happens!” Kay’s eyes moved back to her slowly. “You think this is a game?” “I think violence isn’t always the answer!” --- The guard looked uncomfortable now. Like he shouldn’t even be hearing this conversation. --- Kay stepped closer to Jessy. “You saw one side of my world,” he said quietly. “Don’t mistake that for understanding it.” Jessy held his gaze. “Then explain it to me.” --- A pause. Long. Heavy. --- Then Kay looked at the guard. “Leave.” The guard obeyed immediately. --- Now it was just them again. Always somehow ending with just them. --- “You want honesty?” Kay asked. Jessy nodded once. --- “Men like that don’t come near my house for no reason.” His voice was calm. Too calm. “They come because someone sent them.” Jessy crossed her arms tighter. “And that means you hurt them?” “It means I stop them.” --- Jessy looked at him carefully. “You talk like you’re protecting something.” Kay’s eyes darkened slightly. “I am.” --- Her breath slowed. “Your business?” A pause. Then— “You.” --- Jessy’s heart skipped so hard it almost hurt. --- “No,” she whispered immediately. “No what?” “You don’t get to say things like that.” “Why?” “Because I’m not—” She stopped herself too late. --- Kay noticed instantly. “You’re not what?” Jessy looked away quickly. “I’m not someone you care about.” Silence. --- Then Kay did something unexpected. He stepped even closer. Close enough that she could feel the warmth coming from him. Close enough that her breathing became uneven. --- “You think I’d let bullets near my house for someone I don’t care about?” Jessy’s chest tightened painfully. --- “This is crazy,” she whispered. “Yes.” “You barely know me.” “That doesn’t change anything.” --- Jessy stared at him. Trying to understand how someone so dangerous could sound so sincere. --- “Why me?” she whispered again. The same question. But this time— It meant something different. --- Kay looked at her for a long moment. Then slowly reached up and brushed a strand of hair away from her face. Gentle. Careful. Like she was something fragile despite all her strength. --- “Because when I look at you,” he said quietly, “everything else becomes noise.” --- Jessy forgot how to breathe. --- His hand lingered for one second too long. And somehow— That felt more intimate than a kiss. --- Then footsteps echoed downstairs again. Breaking the moment. --- Kay’s expression hardened instantly. Like a wall sliding back into place. --- “I have to handle this,” he said. Jessy grabbed his wrist before she could stop herself. --- Both of them froze. --- Her fingers around his wrist felt small compared to him. But neither moved away. --- “Don’t kill him,” she said softly. --- Kay looked down at her hand first. Then at her face. --- For the first time— Jessy saw conflict in his eyes. Real conflict. --- Finally, he spoke quietly. “For you…” A pause. “I’ll try.” --- Then he pulled away gently and walked off. --- Jessy stood there alone in the hallway. Heart racing. Mind spinning. Soul confused. --- Because the scariest part wasn’t his violence anymore. It wasn’t the enemies. It wasn’t even the danger surrounding him. --- It was the fact that every day— She felt herself stepping deeper into his shadow. --- And part of her… Didn’t want to leave it. --- “Love becomes dangerous the moment safety starts feeling like addiction.”
