CHAPTER FOUR – The Meeting “Power isn’t proven by what a man says… but by how the room goes silent when he enters.” --- Jessy had never worn heels like this before. Every step felt like a risk. Every movement felt watched. And the dress— The silk still clung to her like a reminder that this wasn’t her world. --- She stood outside the front entrance, waiting. Trying to steady her breathing. Trying not to think. --- A car pulled up. Black. Polished. Untouchable. Just like him. --- The door opened. Kay stepped out. Same calm presence. Same unreadable expression. But tonight— There was something sharper about him. More controlled. More dangerous. --- His eyes landed on her. Paused. Then moved away. “Get in.” No greeting. No hesitation. --- Jessy walked toward the car. Careful with each step. She slid inside. The door shut. And once again— She was trapped in a moving space with him. --- Silence filled the car. But this time, it felt different. Heavier. --- Jessy turned slightly. “Where are we going?” “A meeting.” “You already said that.” “And that’s all you need to know.” --- She frowned. “That’s not an answer.” Kay didn’t look at her. “It’s the only one you’re getting.” --- Jessy exhaled slowly, turning back to the window. The city lights blurred again. But tonight, they looked different. Colder. Further away. --- “Why me?” she asked again, quietly this time. A pause. Then— “Because you listen.” Jessy blinked. “I argue with you every time we talk.” “Exactly.” She turned to him. “That doesn’t make sense.” Kay finally looked at her. “It means you’re not pretending.” --- Her breath caught slightly. She didn’t expect that. --- “Everyone else,” he continued, “says what I want to hear.” Jessy tilted her head slightly. “And I don’t.” “No.” A small pause. “You say what you feel.” --- Jessy looked away again. Her heart was doing something strange. And she didn’t like it. --- The car slowed. Then stopped. --- Jessy looked out the window— And her stomach tightened. --- The building was massive. Glass. Steel. Lights everywhere. People moving in expensive clothes. Security at every entrance. --- “This isn’t just a meeting…” she murmured. “No,” Kay said calmly. “It’s a reminder.” --- “Of what?” He opened the door. “Of who I am.” --- Jessy stepped out slowly. The air felt different here. Sharper. Like everything had a purpose. --- As they walked inside— People noticed. --- Heads turned. Conversations paused. Eyes followed. --- Not because of her. Because of him. --- Jessy felt it instantly. That power. That silent control. He didn’t need to speak. He didn’t need to demand attention. It came to him. Naturally. --- She stayed close. Not by choice. By instinct. --- “Stay beside me,” Kay said quietly. “I wasn’t planning to run.” “That wasn’t a suggestion.” --- Jessy didn’t respond. But she didn’t step away either. --- They entered a large room. Men in suits. Women in elegant dresses. Voices low. Deals happening in silence and smiles. --- Jessy felt out of place immediately. Too real. Too… normal. --- Kay didn’t. He walked like he owned every inch of it. --- A man approached them. Older. Sharp eyes. Controlled smile. “Kay,” he said. “You’re late.” “I’m here,” Kay replied. “That’s what matters.” --- The man’s gaze shifted to Jessy. Lingering. Interested. --- “And who is this?” he asked. Jessy stiffened slightly. Before she could speak— Kay answered. “She’s with me.” --- The man raised a brow. “That’s new.” Kay said nothing. --- Jessy felt something strange again. That same twist in her chest. --- The man extended his hand. “Pleasure.” Jessy hesitated… then shook it. “Jessy.” --- His grip was firm. Too firm. “Be careful,” he said quietly. “Men like him don’t keep things forever.” --- Jessy pulled her hand back. Her expression tightened. “I’m not something to keep.” The man smiled slightly. “Good answer.” --- Kay’s eyes darkened slightly. “Enough.” --- The man stepped back. Hands raised slightly. “Relax. I’m just observing.” --- “Observe from a distance,” Kay said coldly. --- Jessy felt it. That shift. That danger. --- And for the first time— She realized something important. --- This wasn’t just a meeting. This was a game. And she had just been noticed. --- The night continued. People approached. Talked. Left. --- Jessy stayed beside Kay. Watching. Learning. Understanding. --- Until— A voice cut through everything. --- “Well… this is unexpected.” --- Jessy turned. And froze. --- Elena. --- Dressed differently. More elegant. More powerful. Like she belonged here even more than before. --- Her eyes locked on Jessy. Then shifted to Kay. --- “You brought her here?” Elena asked. Kay didn’t react. “Yes.” --- Elena laughed softly. “That’s bold. Even for you.” --- Jessy felt tension rise. She didn’t understand it fully. But it was there. --- Elena stepped closer. Looking Jessy up and down again. “But I guess… she fits.” --- Jessy’s patience snapped slightly. “I’m not here to fit into anything.” --- Elena smiled. “Still talking.” --- Kay stepped slightly in front of Jessy. A small movement. But clear. --- “Enough, Elena.” --- Silence. --- Elena’s expression changed. Not angry. Not jealous. Something else. --- “Careful,” she said softly. “Things like this…” Her eyes flicked briefly to Jessy. “…don’t end well.” --- Kay didn’t respond. --- Elena stepped back. And just like that— She was gone. --- Jessy exhaled slowly. “What was that about?” --- Kay looked at her. For a moment— Something unreadable passed through his eyes. --- “Nothing you need to worry about.” --- Jessy frowned. “That didn’t look like nothing.” --- “It is.” --- She didn’t believe him. --- But she didn’t push further. --- Because something told her— Tonight wasn’t the night for answers. --- As they walked out later— Jessy stayed close again. Not because she was told to. But because she felt it. --- Eyes. Watching. Waiting. --- And for the first time— She understood something clearly. --- Being near Kay wasn’t just dangerous because of him. --- It was dangerous because of everyone else. --- And now— She was part of that danger. --- Whether she wanted it… Or not. --- “Standing beside power doesn’t protect you… it paints a target on your back.”
