For a fortnight, Kimberly mourned her little sister with heavy heart and poignancy. She was her only surviving relation and the only one who reminds her of her mom who passed on in her teens. She cogitated on her childhood experiences and what it was like growing up after the decease of her mother. Her mother was her heroine who taught to become an independent woman. Unlike her mum, her dad was carefree and lackadaisical about committing himself to his family. He was always absent from home, and gambled and flirted with many women. Drinking and leading a pleasure-filled life were his priorities. Her parents got divorced when she was 15. Shortly, her mother died and she was left with nothing. When her ex-husband came her way with his nice looks and pleasantness, she was charmed and fell in love but later realized from their marriage that it was merely a disguise to win her heart as she faced untold humiliation, abuse and violent treatment in his hands.
She had decided to face her career and dissociate herself from any man, presently, while she nursed the thoughts of revenge against her ex-husband whom she believed was behind her sister’s miserable death.
While at work on a sunny day, Kimberly noticed a man opening the door of her boutique and making his way in. Ms Halley welcomed him and said, “What do you need, sir?”
“Do you sell this jewelry,” he said, showing her his phone to see the kind of jewelry he wanted.
“Yes, follow me, sir,” she said, leading the way while he followed. Just as they were about to enter the next section, Kimberly walked out of her office and she and the young man almost collided.
“Oh, sorry, ma’am,” he apologized immediately.
“I’m sorry too. I didn’t see you coming. Have you gotten what you need?”
“She wants to get it…” he paused and looked at her closely.
“Why are you looking at me insanely?” She asked fiercely, losing her temper without knowing it.
“I’m sorry… sorry… Have we met before? Your body looks familiar… I…” he couldn’t finish speaking when she interrupted him, “Young man, it’s inappropriate to try to win a woman with such laughable tricks. You better focus on what you came for and leave immediately,” she overreacted. Ms Halley was stunned, while the young man was dumbfounded. Such bitterness only for a few harmless words? What could he have done. He wondered.
“Again, I’m sorry. It’s just… A couple of weeks ago, I found a woman lying still near the gutters in a miserable state and I took her to the hospital to get treatment and left the hospital without checking up on her. I’ve been trying to find her since then but couldn’t but you look just like her; I’m sorry if I’m mistaken. I beg to take my leave - sorry for my rudeness,” he said and left at once.
