Jay, Brian, and I had a lovely dinner that evening outside on the patio. Jay grilled steaks for us (and a hamburger for his son) and we talked. Our conversation didn’t get into anything heavy, so it was nice and relaxed. We discussed our lives over the past year and even Brian contributed to the conversation by telling me about his preschool and the new puppy his grandparents (Meghan’s parents) had given him for his birthday. At one point, Brian asked how I knew his dad and Jay and I looked at each other before I told him that Jay and I were friends. “Did you go to school with Daddy?” he asked. “No, but I’m a teacher and I met your dad at the school where I teach,” I told him. Jay and I had met when he’d come to the college to film a segment on one of my students who’d won a scholarship
