Ayssa's POV
As I came to, I found myself in darkness, the surrounding forest disorientingly spinning. I blinked several times in quick succession, trying to make sense of the form that was on top of me. And there was Fenris Kilmartin, the alpha of the Northwest pack, staring right at me with those deep blue eyes of his that made my heart drum almost painfully. The last image in my head was of him standing over me and I felt fear wash over me once again.
“Get up” he ordered, his tone low and full of authority, leaving no space for disobedience. I could not move, still trying to make sense of the chain of events that led me to this point. Had I really been foolish enough to step into his domain? My inner self was busy with my husband Killian and the nasty mess I found myself in.
I let out a breath that quavered, before forcing myself upright, my legs shaking in support of me. “Are you kidding? What do you want from me?” I dropped the borderline defiance of my voice to the softness of a whisper.
Fenris moved in, making it impossible to breathe. “You are Alyssa, and you are a catch. A sword in the struggle between packs, and between me and Killian. You will be mine to keep.” Those words were very unsettling. To think of being kept in such a war between two alphas and being made a bargaining tool is actually sickening.
“What do you mean?” My voice shifted an octave higher as I tried to sound courageous. “I’m not a ‘thing’; I’m a woman!”
He let out a chortle that sounded deep and thunderous in the surroundings. “That is correct; however in this domain, strength is all that matters. You shall realize that shortly.” For a brief moment, his fierce expression softened, and I saw something that I should not have seen in a man like him – perhaps, something that was perplexing but was undeniably present. However, it disappeared as swiftly as it came, replaced by the chilling demeanor that I had always associated with him.
“You don’t have to go through this,” I assured him, my voice growing wavy with pleading. “I did not ask for any of these things. Killian forced me into this marriage.”
Fenris stopped, his face not giving anything away. “But still you are here. You stepped across my line and there are repercussions for that.”
My heart started to pound. It suddenly struck me how serious my predicament was. “Please,” I begged, “I just want to go back.”
He seemed to consider me thoughtful for what felt like an eternity, and I noted the brief hint of an internal struggle in his gaze. “Home?” he echoed, in an almost pondering tone, “The one where your father bartered you off to Killian? The one where you were used as a mere bargaining tool?”
His statement resonated, and I felt my eyes begin to get moist. It was a fact; I was a mere puppet controlled by the men in my life. But I would not allow him to perceive that I was weak.
“I am not just that,” I said determinedly, unconsciously straightening my back. “I will not be a pawn in anyone’s game.”
Fenris smirked. “Then you will have to demonstrate that, won’t you?”
With that, he spun on his heels and strode off further away into the forest, beckoning me to come along. For a fraction of a second, I stood still, weakened by fear and reminded of the little rebellion that was beginning to warm up within me. In the end, I made my legs move and followed him into the forest.
As we walked, I observed the scenery. I was not truly summer visiting the Northwest pack, the territory appeared overwhelming with enormous trees and animal noises. It was beautiful in a primal way, but I felt dread beginning to settle over me, knowing what was to come after that.
Fenris walked me to an open space where several battle-ready men stood, their faces set and cold. They regarded me with a hint of hostility as I drew near, and a pang of fear crept into me. Fenris faced them, and instead of being angry, he was just low but high in control.
"Meet Alyssa: Killian Green's wife-to-be,” he stated, and the reactions that came afterward made me shiver. “She will be with us for a while.”
One of the fighters, a burly individual with sable hair and a deep scar across his face, advanced. “What do you expect to do with her, Fenris?”
Fenris’ gaze sparkled with humor. “No, she will be more like a prisoner. One with useful intel about the house of Greenwood.”
I tightened my hands into fists, aware of what he meant. No way was I going to betray Killian, but there was no doubt that Fenris would use me for this purpose.
You think I would come to your aid? I retorted, my voice calm even though a maelstrom of fear brewed inside me.
Fenris advanced towards me threateningly, invading my space for the second time. “You may not have a choice, Alyssa. Your life is at stake. You are not in Greenwood anymore, this is my land.”
I gulped, the impact of his statements like a burden on my back. I was cornered, and the truth about my predicament started to dawn on me.
“That’s enough of that,” Fenris stated, looking back at his men. “Show Alyssa to her room. Ensure she is well taken care of, but keep in mind that she is our captive.”
As they led me away, a mixture of emotions washed over me: fear, rage, and a glimmer of hope. I would not back down without a fight—and I would figure out a way to get out of this hell at all odds.
Once I was accommodated in a small but comfortable room, I spent some time organizing my mind. The walls had rich tapestries covering them and looking at them warmed the heart, in spite of the situation. This place was different from the unbearable chill I had felt in my father’s home.
But I couldn’t afford to drop my guard. In any case, I had to look for an exit, and a quick one.
I was horizontal in bed with my eyes on the ceiling and my head was full of dud plans. I have to come up with a plan, a wise one. Maybe I can make some inquiries regarding Fenris and his crew and discover what they were after from me.
And most importantly, I needed to find a way to go back to Killian and inform him of Fenris’ plans.
Now resolute, I shut my lids and that’s when I realized what I was up against. But just as I was on the verge of drifting off, one thought permeated my brain — this wasn’t close to being finished.
