Chapter 5

2458 Words
The night rolls off perfectly. Chris and Kate are crowned as the prom king and queen, no surprise there. Thus, perfect! They spend the night dancing and having a good time all around before taking the limo to a hangout location with the same group of friends. A moderate amount of liquor is involved, but not excessively so. After a couple of hours, the limo drops Kate at her place. Chris gets out of the car with her. He’s left his SUV in her garage. “Wanna come in for a second?” Kate asks, a smile on her face. Chris takes a moment to answer, contemplating. Both her parents are out of the country on business, leaving nobody in the house except for a butler and a couple of maids. Perfect. No interruption. One of the maids actually took their prom photos and sent them to her parents via text earlier. That kind of life is actually common in Alpequa. Chris knows that kind of life all too well, he lives it. “Sure,” he says. “Actually, if it’s okay by you, I might stay longer than a second.” Kate laughs, it certainly is okay by her. “Of course,” she says casually, at least she’s hoping that she sounds casual. “Do you wanna watch a movie, or something? I’ll make popcorn.” “We can watch a movie,” Chris answers, then winks. “In your room.” Kate sighs. Yes, oh, yes. “Naughty boy,” she says, laughing. “Go on, then. Let me go to the kitchen and make the popcorn first.” “Why don’t I just wait for you, “Chris suggests. “We’ll go up together.” “That works,” Kate replies. “Grab anything you like from the fridge. Get me some diet coke too, please.” Chris does what he was told. He sees some beer and takes one. “Can I?” he asks. Kate shrugs. “Sure,” she answers. “That belongs to my dad, he won’t know if he’s missing one or two. You won’t get drunk from a couple of beers, right?” Chris laughs and rolls his eyes. “Really?!” Kate laughs with him; they did share some scotch when they were hanging out earlier. It’s probably a good idea having Chris stay awhile instead of him driving home, after all. They then sit on the kitchen stools waiting for the popcorn to be ready. Chris talks about some funny events that happened at the prom; Kate laughs at the story. They spend sometime in the kitchen re-living all the funny stuff that happened that night. Kate really was having a good time, marvelous time, she keeps on saying. Chris really was, still is, happy for her. Kate is a good girl, at least Chris thinks that she’s a good enough girl, for a rich kid. Sure, she can be a little snob, and pretentious, and bossy. Well, perhaps cunning too, at times. But it just comes with the territory, nothing she can do about it, really. Well, hell, Chris too can be a little snob, and pretentious, and bossy. But Kate never goes overboard, she’s smart enough to know when to stop. She’s proper like that. She dresses nicely – expensively, and behaves well. Some say that Kate is not only rich, but also blue blood. And it sure is also an advantage that Kate is strikingly beautiful. So, yeah, Chris likey!! And most importantly, Kate never says bad things about Emma. Major brownie point! They walk hand in hand to her room with popcorn, skittles, and a couple of diet coke and beer. Once inside, Chris settles himself in the center of her California king bed. When Kate asks what Chris wants to watch, he tells her that he’ll watch anything, even chick flick. That makes her laugh. Chris then grins, his intention is pretty clear. He has no plan to watch any movie at all. So, Kate plays a light action movie on Netflix, just to humor him. She too, has no plan to watch a movie. Once the movie’s on, she moves closer to Chris who immediately scoops her up on his lap. Kate squeaks but giggles, she puts her arms around his shoulders to steady herself as Chris starts to attack her lips. The attack comes fast and so very Chris. Kate’s heart skips a beat, already he makes her melt like butter. He’s good that way. As his lips kissing hers, his hands are roaming down south. One then parks on her breast, while the other goes even lower towards the hem of her prom dress, raising it up. The said hand then goes under her dress and heads up to caress the inner side of her bare thigh. Kate gasps, suddenly she stops him. “Chris,” she says. “What are you doing?” Chris looks at her funny. “What do you mean? You know what I’m doing,” he answers. “You don’t want it?” “I do,” Kate answers honestly. “But I thought, I thought you wanna break up?” Now Chris stops. “Yes,” he says slowly. “I did say that. But unless you’ve already had another guy ready to take my place, I see no harm for us doing this. I have condoms with me.” Kate sighs. “I don’t have any guy ready to take your place, Chris. I’m not a slut, you know that,” she says softly. “I just don’t know if this is a good idea. You want to break up with me, why should I put out?” “Well,” Chris says, thinking hard. “Why don’t we consider this as our break up present for each other. The prom king and queen have s*x after prom, classic, right? Epic, even. Something to tell our grandchildren about one day. Let’s make it good, Kate. Something to remember us by?” Now that gets Kate thinking. She can’t help but laugh. Chris and his ‘epic’ comment. “I guess,” she says. “Let’s make it good, then. Something to remember us by.” Chris grins. “Now you’re talking,” he says before attacking Kate again. *** Parker turns off the engine of his car in a small spot not far from their pond. He turns to the side to look at Emma. This is it; Parker says to himself. This is the time. “Wanna stay here in the car for a while or walk to the pond?” he asks. “I have a blanket at the backseat we can grab.” “Do you have anything to eat?” Emma asks. “Look at the glove box,” Parker answers. “I have some Hershey’s kisses and water.” Emma smiles. She loves Hershey’s kisses and Parker knows that. That’s why he always keeps them in his car. Parker knows a lot of things about Emma. He’s been paying attention for a long time. “Yum,” she says. “You always have Hershey’s kisses.” Parker gives her a tender gaze. “I always keep them in the car for you.” That makes Emma blush. It’s true. She knows it’s true. “Let’s go sit by the pond, then,” she says softly. “Okay,” Parker replies, but doesn’t make any attempt to move. Emma notices it. “What’s the matter, Park?” she asks, suddenly concerned. Parker laughs a little. “Nah,” he answers. “I just, I just wanna talk to you about something, is all. No biggy.” “Okay,” Emma says slowly, starting to become apprehensive a little. She kinda knows what Parker wants to talk about and actually has been expecting it. The talk. Still, when Parker actually says it, she can’t help but feeling a bit jittery. Parker sees that, her being nervous. He reaches out for her hand and squeezes it a little. His gaze meets hers; he gives her his smile. His kind and loving smile. The smile warmth her heart, so she smiles back. Her smile gives him the confidence he needs to continue. Suddenly, things don’t seem so scary. This is, after all, Emma. His Emma. “I don’t know if you wanna hear this, Em,” Parker starts. “But I need to say it, especially since we’re all gonna leave for college soon. I need to get this out of my chest and we can take it from there. I mean, I can wait to tell you this since the summer is still long. But you know me and my family, we’ll leave for the summer holiday soon, like always. I don’t wanna miss the opportunity to talk to you about it because if I waited, something could happen. And really, there is no reason to wait. Em, you know, you’ve always known. I love you. I’ve loved you since forever. Don’t tell me you don’t know that, because you do.” Emma is still smiling, this time she has tears in her eyes too. “I love you, too, Park,” she answers. “Perhaps I’ve loved you since forever too. I’ve just never realized that until now.” Parker’s eyes widen, his face lightens. “Really, Em?” Emma nods. “Yes, I’m sorry it takes me a long time to realize that, Park.” Parker leans closer to wipe her tears. “That doesn’t matter now, Em,” he says. “I do want you to be my girlfriend, though. So, do you wanna be my girlfriend?” Emma giggles. She becomes shy, somewhat, but she nods. Parker laughs. He looks incredibly happy. Emma too, looks incredibly happy. “You’re so cute, my girlfriend,” he says. “It will be hard with the long-distance thing and whatever, but we can deal. I know we can.” “I know we can, Park,” Emma says before slowly continuing, “I’m not worried about that; I’m not worried about us.” “What is it, then?” Parker asks. “Chris, are you worried about Chris?” “Well, Chris, yeah,” Emma answers slowly. “I wanna talk about him too. I mean, honestly, I know Chris loves me, I just don’t think he loves me the way I…” Emma stops, too embarrassed to continue. Parker laughs lightly. “It’s okay, Em,” he says softly. “I know you’ve had a crush on him for like forever. I know when I’ve been in love with you, you’ve been in love with him. I’m okay with that, I’ve come to terms with that. Especially since now, you said that you love me too. I’m not jealous. We’re above that.” “We probably should talk to Chris about this, right?” Emma asks. Parker nods. “We must tell him. We owe him that much, he’s after all our best friend. I’m worried, though.” “Worried, Chris?” Emma asks. “Why?” “Well,” Parker starts. “What we’ve done this past week always involved him. He’s with us the whole time. And while I was making love to you, I think, he was too. I don’t think this was just s*x for him. I can’t be too fast to dismiss him. I don’t know, Em. I was almost thinking that maybe we should…” “What?” Emma asks, getting a bit apprehensive again now. “Not tell him?” “Oh, no,” Parker answers fast. “I don’t want that. I don’t want to keep a secret from him, that’s a recipe for disaster. No, we’ll tell him, then let him decide if he wants to join us.” “But that’s crazy,” Emma says fast. “Join us?” “That’s unorthodox, but not crazy,” Parker admits. “The thing that he needs to remember is, that all this time I’ve only loved you, only you. You, well, you’ve only loved him, and perhaps me. We’ve all been friends forever and we’re committed to the friendships. That should never change. What we’re about to do, to me, doesn’t seem like we’re taking too much of a leapt of faith. But Chris, he changes his girls like he changes his socks.” Emma laughs. “True that,” she says. Parker laughs with her. “Look, Chris needs to really figure out how much he loves you or if he loves you at all. And if he does, he also needs to figure out whether he loves you as a friend, or as a lover. You see, Chris has a lot of homework still when it comes to this. He will need to make that decision; we can’t make it for him.” Now Emma looks at Parker with pure adoration. How come this boy is still only eighteen. He’s so wise beyond his years. “Okay,” she says. “Okay, Park.” Parker smiles. “Now,” he starts again. “You have one more concern.” Emma sighs, now she looks worried. “Our parents, you know they’re not exactly a fan of each other.” “I know,” Parker admits. “I think when it comes to them, we should just cross the bridge when we get to it. For now, we don’t flaunt our relationship but we don’t keep it a secret either. I don’t want that, you’re not my dirty little secret, Em. People are used to seeing us together, they know we’re best friends, so just keep it that way. I’m not into PDA and I know you’re not either. Once we’re in college, though, we can do whatever we want every time we visit each other. What do you think?” Emma smiles, now she’s giddy with excitement. Parker, how come he’s always able to say all the right things. He just paints Emma a future for the both of them. The future that she likes, loves even. Emma is a simple girl with a simple dream. The thought of finding herself a new man at Princeton terrifies her. She’s not into dating scenes or fighting over a man. And now, she just secures herself a boyfriend. A very handsome one at that. One that she can fawn over and daydream about whenever she’s alone. Because the boy very much wants her too. And will spend his time fawning over and daydreaming about her whenever he’s alone himself. “Yes,” she says, reaching out to hug Parker. “That’s a damn good idea.” ***
