The next morning Kigal sat in her room, the steam from her tea wafting up and curling around her nose. Hannahanna had even put in a heap of ground carob into the mix, knowing it was Kigal’s favorite. Much like everyone else, she must have sensed Kigal’s bitter mood. After much prying and worried glances, Kigal agreed to tell her friends what had happened. Gamil-An sat on a cushion across the room, Hannahanna and Geshtinanna were curled below the foot of Kigal’s bed, and Pashmi sat perched in the low sill of the window. Silence fell over the room as Kigal finished her story of what had taken place the night before. She raised the cup to her pursed lips.
